I recently bought a Ford 8N. The hydraulic hoist gets its oil from the rear end gear case? What type of oil is used in the gear case?

I like 80w90 GL1 oil the best. I think it's the closest thing to being the right stuff this many years later.

Here's a link to the post & thread about the oil. The latest 8N manual (3729-52-C) is available from your New Holland tractor dealer.

I have often used 50W motor oil in the transmission and Hydraulics over the years. I believe it is one of the better choices, especially here in FL where the weather is warm and often humid condensation can be a real problem. Motor oil has the good additives and refrains from having the bad ones and best of all it has rust inhibitors. I do not now why Ford Tractor listed Motor Oil in the 1948 Manuals but I have never heard of the gear failures as Llamas had mentioned, at any rate that would not be a reason to change, nor would it be a reason to put in the Manual as the lag time from inception to printing and distribution would blow the desired effect anyway. 50W motor oil suits my needs just fine and is readily available and I have decided to use it in all 4 of my N's lube as lube changes are required.

The N doesn't have the high temps, pressures, and speeds at the high-end of lubricants specifications. I suspect a lot of lubes provide adequate performance at the lower temps, pressures, and speeds of the N. Those same lubes can't be rated this way or that because they can't deliver at the higher temps, speeds, and pressures required in other equipment. They are probably just fine in this ol' tractor.
I've heard from at least one fellah swears by 30W in the sump. Myself, I've used the 134D but I'm getting away from it because it's so thin, cheap...but thin. I'm liking the mild ep gear oil my manual mentions.

I believe you're mistaken about that. That chart is tranny lube and not engine lube. I know that some guys that have their original manual are still using motor oil, you'll see one post every once in awhile. Ford did move away from motor oil and the current manual now goes with the mild ep gear oil.
