Well, before I write my next post called "What a day! - Bull Riding part 3" I figure I'll start with a really good story. About a month and a half ago, I saw an 8N parked in the middle of a halfway cut pasture up the road from me, and thought awesome!, another "N" owner. Well after a week and some rain went by, I saw the 8N had not moved... Thought to myself "I sure hope all's OK..." Well, another week or two went by, and still the tractor just sat there. A couple of weeks ago, me and Sherry (my better half) were on our way back from the store and I mentioned that the guys tractor had probably broken down, and maybe I should stop by and help. "Adam, you've got way to much on your plate to be spending time on someone else's tractor." So I replied with "Well, wouldn't it have been nice if someone came out and helped with my PTO shaft, when I didn't at the time know how to fix it???"
So, one evening, one the way home from work, dressed like a yuppie, I stop at the guys house.
"Saw your tractor out in the yard and I was wondering if everything was OK" He looked at me like I had two heads!!! "You see, I know my way around these tractors pretty good, and I own one very similar to it" So he then tells me it broke down, and he got a mechanic to look at it. He went around the corner, and pulled out a front mount coil. "The mechanic told me this was bad, and they don't make these anymore. He said it would cost $375 dollars to fix, not including parts and I'll have to wait a month or two before the parts get in" "I'll fix your tractor, tell the mechanic to forget about it" "So how much will you charge?" Not a thing. "Why would you fix my tractor for nothing?" "Cause now, I'm returning the favors others have done for me" (through this board) I stopped by the next day with a multi meter, discovered the coil was indeed shorted, then looked at the tractor again, and with a print out of the YTMAG ording page, I had him order a new 12 v front mount coil. "Really, that simple?" "Yep, just go on and order it. I'll install it next week!" I get out to his house on Friday, (this time wearing overalls) His coil had come in, and he handed it to me. So, with a new coil in hand, all excited and all, I tidied up some of the wiring, and put the coil in. Battery was dead, so I gave it a jump. I had got up on the tractor, hit the starter,,, and NOTHING!!! What the heck, lets have a second look here... Take the coil off, take the distributor off,,, Holy cow, no points, no condenser, yikes... "I'll be back tomorrow or Sunday morning to make this work... Don't worry, I'll get it going" So with some spare parts at hand, and a few borrowed parts from a recently bought tune-up kit for my own problems, I headed out to his house again. Pulled the distributer, installed points, and condenser, made a jumper wire (nice) from the condenser to the points, set the gap, and put it all together. At the start of all this, I was just out there by myself, sort of enjoying life. When I had started to put things back together, he had come out to see how things were going... "Looks like we're ready to try again" Double checked the fluids, put the jumper cables on, and sure enough, that 8N fired right up!!! Sounded beautiful!!! Took the cables off, and smiling from ear to ear said "Go on, test her out!" And I did. Boy the 8Ns are nice!!! Anyway, I returned from a once around, and handed him back the tractor. He could not believe it... It was so nice seeing him so happy... He wanted to pay me, but I couldn't. I had fun with it too!!!
The icing on the cake was when Sherry was returning from her shopping, she saw I had fixed the mans tractor, and notice that he looked truly happy. Hours later, still cutting the grass, and still smiling from ear to ear... She came home and told me about that, and how she noticed him so happy, and how her Adam did that. She was totally proud!!!
That made my day!!!
Thanks guys for the wonderful forum I belong to!!!

I have now had my 1940 9n for over a year. It has bzeen just a wonderful tractor. the only problem i have with it is , it will not hold a load up , it slowly within 3 min go down. i can work with it. i have gotten so much help from the people on this forum, it just makes my day. how all you people take the time out of your day to help others that dont know how to diagnos the problem, Zane and dell have more have forgotten more than i will ever learn. all of you are great, with your information, i am able to keep my tractor running as smooth as a babies behind. i get so many complements on the old ford. but i take pride in her, and treat her well, no bulldozing. or pulling trees out of the ground. it still has plenty of work left in her, and she's not weak. it can really pull a load of gravel on a seven foot blade. thanks again for all your help. i have been working on small engines, welding, etc.mainly tikering. now i have people bringing over there machines. my price is usually the same , this ones on me. Just help someone else in return. doc

Way to go Adam!

It is a dirty rotten shame that someone would take advantage of a person that just doesn't know what to do when something breaks but it seems to me that there are more and more people out there who only think of themselves and nobody else.

I just recently fixed a Kawasaki ATV that a friend had taken to the cycle shop with a leaky carburetor and they had given him an estimat of 2600.00 to fix it. Said that all the transmisson and clutch parts had to be replaced. He brough it to me after paying them 250.00 to put it back togehter. I took it apart and they had just thrown the parts in the housing and closed it up. The sprag clutch was in backwards and both clutches were installed as wrong as you could have done it. I fixed it for him and he is tickled to death.

I told him if he wanted to take them to court I would go be a witness but he is a nice old gentleman and wouldn't do it.

What is this world coming to????? ?

Wow! I sure am glad you didn't listen to Sherry, because if you had, you wouldn't have been able to make her so proud of you!

It warms my heart, and makes me smile whenever I think of seeing that man on his tractor, just riding along, looking as though he had not a care in the world, smiling from ear to ear. My Adam did that!

Thanks for being so special,

Your Sherry

Wonderful feeling, isn't it?! I was able to help the neighbor lady a month ago with the generator on her 9N; it's a great feeling to be neighborly and to work on these old machines.

Thanks for being so kind and helpful to your fellow man.I'm sure this is not your first nor will it be your last time to help. Most tractor people are just plain good folks.I'd be proud to have you as my neighbor. This is the type of thing that makes my day...every day. This is the same reason I am in business...to help others. don b

As they say out in my neck of the woods -- "YA DUN GOOD" !! Really does feel good doesn"t it. And how doubly nice that your sweetie saw and appreciated what you had accomplished. Perhaps that good act will come back to you, but whether it does or not the real "payback" it just knowing that you were able to help your neighbor. Not only in getting his tractor running again for him but also in letting him know that some people still do help each other just to be neighborly. GOOD JOB !!

Awesome story. Now a days when most folks have their hand out looking for money or asking "what"s in it for me?" and taking advantage of someone in need. You have given what you are able to give and asked for and expected nothing in return. Whether you want it or not, your reward will come to you. When you need it most and expect it least. I love this forum for the good and helpful people here. Just my 2 cents, Eric

A fellow employee, of my wife, had a computer crash. He asked a computer shop, here in town, about retrieving the information. They told him it would need to be sent away and it would cost $1500.00. My wife told him, she thought she could retrieve the information. She was able to retrieve all of the information, with the programs she had on hand. The computer owner was happy with the results, but unhappy with the computer shop - and he let them know about it. The computer shop is no longer in business. The interesting thing, my wife has had no formal computer education. She acquired her knowledge by reading and by using computers.

Great job! It is always a fantastic feeling to have helped someone in trouble. I have convinced several people to buy an 8N or "newer" old Ford vs the $15,000 to $20,000 imports. They still have $15000 in the bank (or no payment) and the tractors perform beyond expectations. I've helped several people with "MAJOR" mechanical trouble only to discover the usual pitfalls of poor maintenance (like car battery cables) or lack of use (gee, it was running when I parked it last year)crud.
They are not a $40,000 car or truck but they still need occassional attention. And drive them!

You will be repaid for your efforts, probably by someone else, in some way you don"t even contemplate today. Believe it.

Your mileage may vary

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago with my Dads 1963 Ford 2000. It had been down a few years, three mechanics looked at it and said it would take thousands of dollars to fix. He told me he really needed it because he had some hay to move and brush hogging that needed to be done - and he guessed he would have to buy a new tractor. New wiring harness, coil, solenoid, points plugs and condensor and I got it running. The hard part was the several hours cleaning the entire fuel delivery system from gummed up sludge from gas sitting two plus years. My Dad has been sending me pictures of him moving the large round hay bales and brush hogging the pasture that was WAY over due.

I got more enjoyment seeing him happy than when I finally got my mis-ground valve seat flush again on my 52 8N.

Thanks for the story,
Dan

Awesome story! I have done something similar with small things like replacing an oil pressure guage and checking out a carb and discovering a fuel line problem on a neighbors tractor. It does give you a sense of good natured pride to have helped someone out and i'm glad you did that so the man wouldn't think "Oh, all Fords are just junk!" Thanks for for giving a helping hand and rekindling a spark of appreciation for these old tractors.

Good job, Adam. Sounds like a very good day.

Now, that 'tractor mechanic' needs tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail.
