I have been told that somewhere late in 52 the 8Ns were changed to the slower speed reverse gear.
Can anyone tell me the serial number this change was made or another way to determine if the tractor has the slower reverse?
Thank you.

Like Dave said.. look by your left heel.. kinda under the running board.. the tranny casting will have a protrustio, instewad of going straight back to the flange.

My 52 8n has the slower gear.. my sn is 504580.

Also.. don't get your hopes up much.. the reverse still feels pretty wild on mine if the throttle is high.. I can only imagine what an 8n without the 'slow' reverse feels like..

Yeah! I think that I have the slow reverse on a 52 N, and it seems way too fast to me, so it does not really help that much I guess. My S/N is 499222

Go to the Smith Tractor Page to see it. The lower part of the left side of the tranny by the foot board has a hump in it for the larger gear. That is the lower revers you are asking about,
