hi guys, long time got a problem, my covers on the side of the block,(tappet inspection covers) are leaking oil .
Since there are two covers, can they be removed without bothering the exhaust/intake manifold?
Also, how much of a pain is it to change the rear axle seals? my fluid is dripping from drums to the inside of the wheels. thanks guys

My 2n had a Chineese manifold on it that overhung the tappet covers. When Torgued down it tipped the covers enough to make them leak constantly. Took the manifold off and ground with 4.5" rotary grinder enough to clear the covers. I have also found on both my N's that the covers edges were bent(not strait). Spend a little time with a hammer on the bench vise. Next step was cork gaskets, gasket sealer on the gaskets and cement in place on the covers. I also used a very small amount of silicone rubber on the bolt threads and placed a small flatwasher over the cover with a small dab of silicone there and tightened down. I have 2 n's with no leaks from the valve covers
I have done axel seals on my 2n but not my 8n

You can remove those covers and replace the gaskets but it's tight without removing the governor and manifold. Hard to clean the gasket surfaces. Torque the studs 8 to 10ft/lbs and see it that stops the leaks.
You might lower the hydro oil level. Some guys remove the bottom most bolt in the inspection plate and remove whatever comes out. That keeps the oil off those axle seals.
Replacing the axle seals aren't that big a deal but refacing the axle is tough. If I did it again I would cut a card stock spacer to move the seal so it rides on a different spot on the axle. You wouldn't have to remove all the pitting and groove in the axle that way.
