Painting the manifold

Hello Everyone,

I see that the original paint color of the 8N's manifold was red. Just how long would that paint last under the heat of the exhaust. When I reach the re-paint point on my tractor, I would like to do it as original, but it seems that I would be better off just painting it black with some high temp paint.

Does that make better sense for a working tractor?

Regards,

Brent, Check out POR-15 web site. They now offer a "Manifold Paint" a high temp coating. Colors are silver and iron grey (I think). They put out good products. Lugnut

 How hot? -- 750 -- 900F in reply to Eric ATL, 08-06-2004 13:24:00

Just looked at this site:

www.tpub.com/content/construction/14250/css/14250_29.htm

They say "faint red in dark" is 750 F
Faint red is 900 F

When hot the exhaust mainfold will glow red -- much easier to see it in the dark.

Originally the cast iron manifold was painted on the tractor, red. That paint was starting to burn off by the time the tractor was delivered to the owner. The best way to make it last is to have it cermic silver gray coated but it is costly about $150-200 just for the coating! When ceramic coated, paint it red and the red will burn off the exhaust tubes but not off the intake giving it both good looks and protection from rusting. Used to get High-Temp Powder Coating done for $35 but the EPA has re-formulated the H-T Powder Coating materials and it's not worth doing anymore as it will burn and bubble. Hi-Temp paint as mentioned is the only inexpensive method but won't last long.

I used Rustoleum High Temp BBQ/chimney paint on my 52 model. It is a dull powdery looking black, but looks great and hasn't burned off after several hours. On my 48 model (in pic) I just used a spray on Rustoleum gloss black that seems to be holding pretty well and looks even better than the flat black.

Good luck,
Dan

On my JD-B I use dthat barbq black high temp paint. So far it is still black and hasn't burnt off.

On my 2n I painted the whole manifold greay with everything else. Pretty quickly, the grey turned to a nice brown patina.. and has stayed that way so far... the intake side is still grey..

painted my tractor a couple months ago. I painted my new exhaust manifold with aluminum color hitemp paint before I installed it. When I painted the tractor, just painted over the hitemp paint with the tractor enamel. Used regular acrylic enamel with hardener. When I started running the engine, the tractor enamel started discoloring pretty much right away. After only ~10-15 hours, most the enamel on the exhaust half has turned black or flaked-off, leaving the shiny hitemp paint behind. The intake half is slightly discolored but still looks OK.
I saw several colors hitemp paint out there, might be able to find a shade of red kind-of close to Ford red, otherwise, paint it black or aluminum or grey color.
