Well.. I am just now getting over a small alergic reaction to a wasp sting earlier in the day. After putting my tools in the barn from working on the mower I managed to 'bump' into one of those maen little guys. got me on the right wrist pretty good. I hit the spot with some vet spray for the horses as I was in the barn, and then headed inside to grab some prescription alergy medicine I keep for just this purpose.

Wrist swelled pretty good and hurts like the dickens right now

Just a reminder to all to be carefull!

Soundguy ( whos is typing with one hand as the other one hurts too much! )

Hello All,

Last summer I was emptying our garden shed as we were moving to our new place in the country :). Some wasps had built a nest in the shed on the floor in a bundle of soaker hoses that I picked up. Yow!!! A couple of them hit me quick and I high tailed it outta there.

However, I had just purchased a little device called a Therapik from Lee Valley Tools (no affiliation). This battery powered gadget is used to spot heat the area of the tissue where you have been stung. Apparantly many of the creatures that sting or bite us have a venom that is suseptible to being destroyed by heat.

Anyway, I ran to the house grabbed the Therapik and used it on the stings. It gets hot and the heat hurts a little to be sure, but 20 seconds on each sting and I was pain free and had no swelling. What a gem this little tool is. It's also extremely effective on mosquito bites. Takes the itch away in seconds.

You can read testamonials about it at>Link
scroll>Link down to the Therapik section.

You can buy one at>Link

I>Link have nothing to gain if you buy them, just wanted to point out a dandy little device that makes the hurt, pain and swelling go away.

Regards,

I've heard of wives tails of holding a spoon under hot water for a second and then touching it to a sting right after it occours.

Perhaps there is something to it..

My granddad had arthritis in his hands and wrists. He'd catch a yellowjacket and have it sting him on the back of the hand to relieve the arthritis. True story. He did that into his 70's. He obviously wasn't allergic to them. DON TX

I was painting the exterior of a dog kennel with a roller brush and after awhile I noticed there were a heck of a lot of flie swarming around... Then I got stung on my right index finger and saw the light! There was a pretty large nest inside the wall. The looked like yellow jackets, but what did I know back then. That was when I as sixteen. I'm 43 now, and still have a piece of the stinger in my finger.

When I was about 28 I bought a 1938 IH TD 35 track tractor. I made a blade for it and was clearing some land next to a small creek. I was about to cross the creek so I dropped the blade next to the bank so it would push some dirt into the creek and ease my drop into the creek and then when I dropped into the creek I was covered by yellow jackets. There was a thick cloud of them all around me. I only had on a T shirt that was drenched with sweat and they were getting me everywhere. I knocked the clutch out of gear and jumped into the shallow creek and ran about a hundred yards down stream with the whole tribe following and stinging me then I lay down in the shallow creek and rolled until they were all gone. I crawled up on the bank and passed out. When I woke the tractor was still running and I got up and drove myself home about five miles and fell in the door. I still had about 150 yellow jackets hanging onto me by their stingers and too many stings to count on the rest of my upper body. If it had not been for the neighbor who was a nurse coming with a shot of Bennedril I might not be here. I was in bed for two whole days and another week to completely get over it.

The tractor ran for two days and I finally thought about it and asked a friend to go turn it off. He brought back the yellow jacket nest which I had dug up with the blade and it was about a foot tall and in five layers about big as a dinner plate.

The one sting that hurt the worse was one just at the base of my nose on my upper lip. Like a sledge hammer hit me!

That was about 35 years ago and I am still afraid of yellow jackets!

You Alabama guys must be tough! You're darn lucky ...lot's more people in the U.S. die from stings than from snake and spider bites every year.

Your right about the one feeling like a sledge hammer. The one I had my reaction to was a yellow jacket sting right beside my nostril. I was up stripping shingles off a roof. It hit me and I took a running leap(not a good Idea on a roof) and just barely slid to a stop at the edge. yeah it felt exactly like getting hit in the face with a hammer

That sounds real painful...those bugs are mean!

I've been hit a few times, all within 100' of this house right here. I've gotten to where I pay attention. I try to notice any flying thing in my side vision or what. Seems when you get too close they will buzz you a time or two and if you back off they leave you alone. I've had 'em bounce off of me before they attack too.

So, I don't ignore movement in my side vision and I know what it means when something flys across my face. I stop, back away, and take a look at what's going on. I can get 'em with the wasp spray from 15', I keep a can at the back door.

Of, course if you dig up the mother-ship like Zane did no stopping and backing away or can of spray is going to help much.

Here's a follow up. It is now 1 am.. I got home from work about an hour ago. The swelling is just -starting- to go down, and the pain is -beginning- to go away.

So far I've taken 3 aspirin earlier.. and then whe I got home a couple ibuprophen.. which is pretty much my limit till tomorrow.

Had some benadryl cream and rubed that on the spot, as well as took another dose of antihistimine.. That last antihistamine and ibrprophen an hour ago seems to be what is producing the 'good' results. I'm adding some more cream and going to bed.

I'm hoping to wake up tommorow with a normal sized wrist.. and a arm that doesn't hurt... Anyone know how long a wasp-sting reaction is sopposed to last?

When I was a kid I was alergic to wasps and ants.. but in my early 20's I got stung a few times with -0- effects.. now it seems I'm alergic again.. go figure..

Thanks for the replies.

The most dangerous time for a reaction a sting 7 to 10 days after a previous sting. Your immune system takes that long to be fully charged from that first one then if you get another one it can be dangerous. That exact thing happened to me. Never was allergic before but got stung twice a week apart and the second one almost did me in. Doc says it is bad that way. So souNdguy watch out for the next couple of weeks..Till things settle a bit...Tim

Stinks that you got stung. I hate anything with a stinger. We took possesion of our property 6 months ago. I went in the 32" x 32" tin roof building that hadn"t seen a soul for years armed with 4 spray cans of industrial strength wasp killer. Used all four cans inside and out. Then set off six bug bombs inside and left it for a week. We came back to more dead wasps than you could count. We plan on turning it into a cabin so it"s as bug free as possible for the renovation. How do you folks with horses or other animals deal with killing these pests in the barn without harming the animals?

SouNdguy, One good thing came out of it, you"re spelling is better one handed. Just ribbin. I hope the swelling and pain are soon just a memory. Eric

I once grabbed the top of a bag of mulch that had been opened that was stored in a shed. I had the gloves on that I use for yard work such as pruning the roses. Felt something sticking me on the hand and thought I had a rose thorn in one the gloves. It sort of hurt but was bearable, then noticed things flying all around me!!! I dropped the bag and jumped out the door like a bomb was about to go off inside!

The nest of yellow jackets was three layers, two of which were as big as a dinner plate! LOTS of jackets in there!! I was luck I got only the one sting, and that was through a good pair of split cowhide gloves. I am also lucky that I don't react very much to stings - spider bites sometimes are different.

Sure don't like yellow jackets after that episode, they are just plain MEAN!
