while using the front end loader this morning the hydraulics stopped working. first thing i did was check fluid level and that was ok. Next thing i did was shut off the valve the allows the fel to work, unchain the the 3 point arm and try to raise or lower the arms. The control lever does not have any effect when i try to raise or lower and the arms stay about half way up. when i push them down they are kind of spongy where i can push them down a little but they will go back up about half way. where should i start looking. thanks

I would be sure to check to see that you have plenty of oil in the reservoir. Spongy lift can only mean air in the ram and the only way for air to get into the ram is if the pump is pumping air instead of oil because of extremly low oil level.

No response, eh? in reply to MikeR, 08-07-2004 14:01:07
Haven't seen this particular problem but the 1st thing, and often overlooked, is the fluid. Change it every spring or 600hrs which ever some 1st. If you don't know then change it and hope that helps.
Otherwise, the book says remove the inspection plates and take a look-see. If I were you, I would trundle on over to the farm/ranch store this afternoon, pick up a copy of the FO-4 (~$27) and a bucket of mild ep gear oil per Ford spec M-4864A & B (~$33), go home and work through the FO-4 hydraulics trouble-shooting.
Zane has posted troubleshooting and you can search the archives up there in the upper left corner (type: hydraulic zane). It pretty much all starts with taking off the inspection plates and taking a look-see. The FO-4 has pictures of what it is you will be looking at and why. Good to have I reckon.
