Purchased a shifter boot from TSC yesterday. I have a 41 9N. Package says for all 4 speed transmissions. Salesman told me they count reverse as a gear.. 9N is 3 forward one reverse. Hate to tear it up trying to get the wrong one on. Bottom of the boot looks really small compared to what it needs to slip onto. Any thoughts?

Two other helpful hints when putting on the shifter boot.... you can warm it up with hot water, that works great, but if you lubricate the shifter with a little bit of liquid dish soap it will slide right on easily. Secondly, even though you have a good fit, you can make it better if you have a plastic wire tie and snug it around the top of the boot that assures a tight seal....

Like the others said... the TSC guy is a moron.. and there is a corect boot for the 3 spd tranny.. however.. the 4spd boot will go on fine too.

You just have to heat it in some hot water. I boiled a pot of water in the shop using my propane torch and a metal soup can.. droppe dthe boot in, and pulled it out after about 15 seconds using a pair of tongs and then popped it on the shifter, and right at the base, I rolled it up on itself, and then rolled it back down.

Fits good.

If you want the real one, you may have to order it from here or another online parts house.

I got mine for the 2N right from NH. All of about 2 bucks or something. Went on easy, I did the roll up trick, and it just popped into place.

Am I missing doing something right on my shifter boot? I just got a new one, took the knob off the shifter and slid the boot down. Am I supposed to do more at the bottom on top of the transmission? I know the older N's had no removable knob on the lever which make inserting it onto the shifter, but I get the impression from all of this conversation that I am not sealing properly at the bottom or something. Inquiring minds want to know.....

I think that salesman is a loon. He's all alone counting R when he says 4-speed.
The boots are different. Get one that says 3-speed.

The boot should work ok. Most fellas put the boot into boiling water for a while. This helps making the boot easier to slip on. HTH
