Check fuel flow from carb bottom, and check to see that all plugs are fireing nice and blue. Also look for fouling.

Havn't changed your carb mainjet setting lately have ya?

When it starts to loose power.. does a little choke help any? If so look for weak spark, vacume leak, or fuel delivery problem ).

SouNdguy, you described my problem perfectly. The tractor is a 48 8N, and it has recently started to sputter and lose power under any kind of load. Pulling the choke out (anywhere from .25 to.50) smooths out the sputtering immediately. Seems to run fine otherwise -- no problems idling, even at high rpms.

Any suggestions?

If choke helps, it is either weak sparkies needing an enriched mix to fire, or a lean mix due to a vacume leak, and the choke enriches it, or it could be a clogged mainjet / filters, and the choke provides extra manifold vacume to pull the fuel thru. This is all assuming you havn't leaned out the mainjet.

Check your spark.. chek the conditions o fhte cables, and the rotor/cap.. check the electrical connections upstream, like to and from the resistor and the ignition switch. Corrosion / rust will lower the voltage.

Check voltage at the top of the coil.. should be 2.5-3.5 with points closed.. and batt volts points open.

If it isn't there.. check the air breather.. a clogged air breather can be as bad as a clogged fuel line. Next check fuel flow at the carb bottom.. you need a nice healthy stream. Might run it into a glas jar to look for water or sediments.

Failing al of that you might check for a vacume leak. There are a couple ways thet get mentione dalot. 1 way is to start the tractor and then spray a whif of ether around the carb.. if the engine speed changes.. you have a leak. Can also be done with an unlit propane torch.. jus tturn the gas on and wave it around the carb, and gaskets.. that latter one is probably safer to a degree. Also.. do this outside.. and try it when the tractor is cold.. less dangerous.

Thanks for the response. I will begin going through your list of suggestions, starting with the spark plugs. I'm somewhat mechanically illiterate, so I may have to send you an email or two (or three) along the way.
