we resently got a Ford 8n when we bought a house, the tractor came with. It ran fine until I started mowing with it. I ran it for a half an hour and then idled down to shut it off. I came back after 35 minutes or so and it wouldnt start. It doesnt have much spark when I pull the plugs to check them. the coil gives good spark, and the points are good. The cap and rotor appear to be a year or so old. new plugs, but not plug wires. Ive checked everything I can think of, but still no go. any help would be greatly appreciated

Dell's words from a previous post:

There are 4 common runtime issues with N-Engines.

1) runs for about 60 minutes and quits, restarts next day, BAD ignition coil
2) runs for about 15 mins and quits, restarts in a bout 1 hr, Gunked up ignition switch
3) runs for about 3 mins and quits, restarts in a bout 15 mins, Clogged gas filters, check your glass bowl filter and your carburetor elbow filter (there is 3, but 2 most common)
4) runs for about 1 minute and quits, restarts in about 30 minutes its BAD CONDENSER in ignition distributor If you got a square front mount distributor, it’s a 2-bolt undo, 15 minute job on kitchen table to replace the condenser and check/replace the ignition points. (gap = 0.015") Generally, you just buy BOTH the points and condenser in a "kit". The front mount distributor is driven by "off-set tang" and unless you use big hammer, you can't re-install it out of time. Just start both 5/16 bolts by finger and rotate the distributor rotor until everything slips together, then tighten the 1/2" hex bolts. Snap the distributor cap in place, snap the square coil in place and you should be good to go. And NO, you don't have to unplug the spark wires from the 4-terminal flat cap to remove the distributor, just unclip and push cap aside. BTW, the firing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW.

You didn't say, but I assume you have a sidemount distributor, 6v positive ground. If the tractor has been converted to 12v, I'm not going to be much help! First off, do you have a test meter? If not, you will need one with an N! A test meter ($20, analog, Walmart) will make your life a lot easier. If you have one, check for battery voltage (about 6.25v) at the distributor. Next, pull the cap, and check the voltage across the points. While you're in there, gap is .025; check it on all four lobes. Next, as was previously stated, start replacing one part at a time, condenser first. As to the ignition switch.....they do have intermintent shorts! If you think it might be bad, just jump it & see if it works. Don't forget to check continuity inside the distributor, and make sure your secondary wire from the coil is clean, bright & tight on both ends. Get back on the board if none of this works; we will try again!

Careful here. You should read battery voltage at the distributor if the points are open. But it would be zero volts with the points closed.

I would go buy a new condenser, a set of plug wires, and a distributor cap and rotor. Leave the plug wires, cap and rotor in their store cartons and try the condenser first. If that cures the problem, then take the rest back.

One more possibility is a cracked distributor cap. VERY hard to see the cracks. I've taken the cap off with the coil & plug wires still attached and cranked the engine and observed the inside of the cap. Sometimes you can see blue fire in the cracks unless the distributor cap is bone dry. A cracked cap will behave badly when there is moisture.

ryan the first thing i would is replace your sparkplug wires. bad wireds can cause a weak spark and a short. then if you still have trouble you can explore further.
good luck

I'll venture a guess. This symptom seems to be at epidemic proportion lately. I only know this from reading other posts. It may be your ignition switch. Read some recent posts (within the last 2 pages) that have the same symptoms. I think you may find your solution. Sorry not to help more. Eric

I just did that about two hours ago, I forgot to mention that, and still nothing. It acts like its running on two cylinders when I pull start it. I suspect the plug wires but I dont see how it would run fine then just not start in that short of a time frame.

Make sure when you replaced thos plug wires you got them 1-2-4-3 CCW

N's will start and run w/ no power on 2 cyl.

Check spark again.. might be grounding problems with the feedthru wire at the distribuitor.. or dirty contacts..

Lots of great help here. Someone is sure to chime in soon with more help than I can provide. If you do replace the wires (I'm not saying that is your problem) make sure you get copper core wires. After reading many posts about it all plug wires are NOT created equal. Hope to help, Eric

I may be way off , but hows the battery? if you were running it and the charging system wasn't working, it would just be running off the battery. Then when it is time to restart not enough juice for good sparks. Just a suggestion might try charging it up and trying before throwing parts at it.
