My governor has started leaking oil at the mounting face, Quick question - when I take the governor apart, will anything come flying apart ( anything under spring pressure or tension)? Thanks for the help

You might want to pull it apart and check, the bearings may be starting to eat through the case.

Nope. Go for it. in reply to 9N 89716, 08-13-2004 13:25:48
It comes off the tractor in one piece. You could hold it there in one hand, run a 1/16" bead of RTV, slap it back on, torqued the bolts to 10ft/lbs, and you're good to go. You'll be fine.

Better yet, treat the problem and not the symptom. The housing is probably warped from being overtightened. Pull the governor off and remove the small set screw that you"ll find on the face next to the gear. Grasp the gear and pull the guts out of the housing and set them aside. Get a fresh sheet of 100 grit sandpaper, lay it on a flat, true piece of steel, and lap the face of the housing until it"s flat again. Reasseble and put her back on with a fresh gasket. If you"re patient and lap it true, it"ll cure the leak every time.
