Gentlemen: I would appreciate any input on my current problem with my 12v 8n. I had to jumpstart it the last few times I've used it and the last time the tractor would run only a few minutes until it died. Today, I replaced the battery(which was very dead), and there was no fire when I atttempted to start it. I then jumped it, with no problem until removing the cables and the engine died immediately.

One problem solved..... ...but same scenerio. It was a problem with the old sized terminals and I scraped them down to get a good ignition. However, the previous problem still exists..... .I run for a while (5-10 minutes) and the engine dies. Could this be a carborator(sp?)?

Nuebie..... ...there are 4 common runtime issues with the frontmount N-Engine (6 or 12 volts)

1) runs for about 1 minute and quits; bad condenser; not your stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits; clogged fuel filters; not your stated problem
3) runs for about 1 hr and and quits; restarts the next morning; BAD IGNITION COIL; not your stated problem
4) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; restarts innna 'bout 1 hr; sound like your problem?

GUNKED-UP ignition switch gutts. You doubt? next time jumper your ignition switch wiring with a pre-made jumper wire with alligator clippies; bettcha starts right up..... ....respectfully, Dell

Mr. Dell,
The tractor is a sidemount distributor(that's what you meant). It has been converted to 12v.

Thanks,

Thanks Mr. Dell,
Sounds like it could be either #2 or 4. Where does one find the fuel filters on a '52 8N?

Neubie..... ...There are 3 gasoline filters in your N-Tractor. 1) ontop of your glass fuel filter bowl. It should be intuitively obvious how to use the bottom thumb screw to remove the glass bowl and filter screen.

2) the stealth filter in the elbow of your carb

3) the secret cylindrical screen filter ontop of your fuel turnoff valve that you have to REMOVE the valve to get to and have all the gasoline leak down your elbow into your armpit. It usually has melted by now and has clogged up your down pipe into the glass filter bowl. In which case you must replace the ENTIRE fuel valve assy ($20 cheap)

Tip: check your fuel filters by removing the 7/16 plug at the bottom of your carb. Gas should flow like an old man peeing into your glass canning jar. Heres a chance to also check for water in your gasoline.

Reminder: ALWAYS turn your fuel control valve OFF, otherwize your carb float can sometimes not float and fill up your engine with gravity flow gasoline and cause hydraulic lock of the pistons and nasty things to your engine parts..... ..... respectfully, Dell

Those pictures are just great. Thank you. I had the carb apart several years ago. Was absolutely certain that everything was checked and cleaned. After seeing your pictures decided to look again at the elbow. Surprise no filter. Also surprised that that there was no way to tell that there was supposed to be a filter and that it had been removed. Purchased one Saturday.

Filters for me seem to have a mind of their own. They always pass good quantities of fuel when I am looking at them. In the 85-degree heat and far away from tools they stop passing fuel. Had to makeshift with a stick to dislodge the junk from the in tank filter while in the field a week ago. Less than a week before the glass bowl had been cleaned and the carburetor drain flow checked.

Neubie..... ...there are many ways to convert to 12 volts, some of them even work well. Its hard to guess what your specific problem is but heres some things to think about.

The N-Engine uses so little battery power to run the sparkies that you could have been living on your 12 volt battery for months for sparkies. This is specially true, iff'n you were jump-starting your tractor from another battery.

When you replaced your very dead 12 volt battery, there is a really strong possibility that you miss-wired your new battery cables or didn't clamp yer battery cable tight on the new SMALLER 12 volt battery post.

Just recently, the 12 volt battery posts have become a slightly SMALLER DIAMETER and the OLD battery molded clamp won't clamp tight to the post. You may think you're tight but you ain't. Inspect your battery clamps for fit. The clamp ends thru the bolt should NOT TOUCH when clamped on the battery posts.

Iff'n ya can't clamp tight, spread your battery clamp and file some soft lead from the clamp space so your bolt will completely clamp tight..... ....Dell

My guess would be a dirty battery cable. Check the inside of it where it clamps on the battery post. If you don't have a cleaning tool, a thin blade of a pocket knife works well.

When you "jumped starteed" your tractor, did you just jump the starter, or, did you attach the battery cables to your on board battery?

Ah.. when you say that you had "no fire", does this mean the spark plugs had no fire? Did the starter attempt to turn over? Do you have a negative ground?

Sorry for the questions, but we need to start somewhere. John,PA
