8N Front wheels wobble

When operating my Ford 8N in fourth gear the front wheels have started to wobble quite severely (no problems at low speed). The right wheel seems to be worse, however the left wobbles as well. This condition seems to have gotten worse in the recent past. I am not a mechanic but noticed the top linkage rods have lots of play when twisted (rocks back and forth). Is this condition something I can fix myself. My shop manual doesn"t cover the topic. Thanks

You are off in the wrong direction. Go to the steering box. you will notice a lot of play in the two arms attached to the box. Both of these arms are adjustable, just take out most of the play and you will be like new again. Lennich

I had the same problem with my 8N. Try adding a little toe in by shortening the steering rods a few turns. Simple fix. I the front wheels are aligned with zero toe in or out, they will tend to wander at higher speeds, hence the wobble. Another indication is when you make sharp turns on the grass, the outside front wheel will dig up some grass. Try turning and watch the front wheel. If the wheel digs in, adjust the toe in. The wobble at high speed should go away.

Been there, done that, got grease on my t-shirt.

It appears to the wheels only. They turn fairly true at slow speeds. When in fourth gear and only partial throttle the wobble begins. The faster the worse it gets. The wheels basically wobble to the extent that the tractor can not be driven in fourth gear. I will attempt to check the bearings. I do not think the front end is loose although there is some play in the top linkage rod that extend from the steering mechanism by the brake to the ball joint in the front near the wheel. I can twist the linkage with my bare hand. Thanks and as you can tell I am not gifted in the mechanical sense.

Another thing on the front wheel bearings, if you've cleaned the tractor with a high pressure washer (car wash), then you probably have moisture in teh front hubs. Water gets pushed in from the inboard side of the bearing (tractor side). Doug.

Of course all the connections and attachments should be tight fitting and the steering sector gears have minimum tolerances between the moving parts.

CASTER ON THE FRONT END

"Caster" has a lot of effect on wheel shimmy. If the front wheels have enough caster the wheels will not shimmy no matter how much slack you have in the steering mechanism.

"Caster is when the king pin or in the Ford tractor configuration the "Spindle" angle is such that the top of the king pin is behind the bottom of the king pin when a straight line is drawn from top of the king pin to the horizontal plane of the ground. The more the caster the more the wheel tends to want to remain going straight ahead.

If the radius rods are bent so that they are curved upwards you can bet that you don't have the right caster. Also the pins that hold the front axle at the ends of the radius rods can be worn and loose and cause loss of caster.

You can even exagerate the caster by bending the radius rods so that they curve down instead of up.

The more caster you have the more effort it takes to turn the steering wheel when moving forward.

Caster is what makes it hard to drive a vehicle backwards because there is negative caster in the front wheels when moving in reverse and the front wheels tend to want to go right or left and not straight back.

Take a look at the wheel brgs. in reply to BJG, 08-15-2004 03:52:30
Front wheel bearings should be repacked with short fiber grease and adjusted every 600hrs. If they haven't been done that way or you don't know then pull the dust cap, remove the nut, pull the hub, inspect, repair as needed, repack, adjust, and see what you got. Need to do it anyway and it might fix your problem.

BJG, I'm not clear on the wobble. Is it like the front end "loose" or is it the wheel (only) that wobbles? Each one has it's own repair.Be a little mor clear and help will be on the way.Plenty of great help on this board.
