Why would one waste the time, effort, and money on a machine that wasen't as good as a team of mules when new? If you spent as much time, effort, and money shopping for a new quality built overseas machine you'd all be farther ahead.

You would have to had been there in those days. In 1940 our new 9N replaced 2 of 3 large teams of horses and eventually when the capability of the tractor was known the third team was also sold.

Any pictures of the tractor when it was new?

Maybe recollections of early service problems or operation instructions?

Thanks for sharing.

I do have a couple of shots of it from the early to mid forties, it was still like new. I still have the original owners, service, plow and cultivator manuals that came with it, still like new. I do not recall it ever being in need of a service man except for a flat rear tire. My instructions on operating it started in 1944 and came from a very stern Uncle Jack. I was just 6yrs old and pulled the hay wagon and loader down the long rows with one of the two Uncles jumping off the hay wagon at the rows end to turn it around. The 9N was a part of the family till it was traded for a Jubilee in 1953.

Like many others on this board, I am old enough to remember using mules. I have also used Japanese tractors(owned by others), driven Japanese cars (owned by others), and fought in overseas combat in defense of your right to say whatever you want.
I could have bought a different tractor, but I chose my 8N because I like it. I don't care if you like it or not. Buy what you want. Do what you want. Say what you want. This is America.

Hi Rocketman,

I love 'em! I used them on the farm as a kid, and was thrilled to find mine. I found out what a quality machine they really were, and what innovators Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson were, and what they did for agriculture all over the world. So many other companies copied the three point hitch. There are hundreds of thousands of N's still working. I'm able to dig postholes, plow, disc, bush hog, finish mow, blade, pond scoop, etc., etc. Mine is a '42 2N. I am able to work on them, and I'm no mechanical genius. Mules can only pull, but these machines can do lots of other useful things. I bought mine for $1700, and spent another $1500 on several implements. This tractor helped me transform my 42 acres of rough land into an orchard and vinyard, and landscape my property. For a pittance, I will be able to work my land for the rest of my life. I think it's a fantastic deal, and so do a whole bunch of other people. I love the fact that I can still get the parts and take alot of pleasure and satisfaction in fixing and working these old work horses. I've got a lot of respect and appreciation for them. The real question is, why would anyone stick their nose in where it doesn't belong, and stir up a bunch of good folks who are just persuing their own happiness, working and restoring great old machines? Just my humble opinion,

Joel

I'll try to be polite!

The reason I have a '48 8N instead of a new tractor (foreign or domestic) is that I had $5,000 to spend on tractor and implements, not $20,000+. I doubt I (or my great grandson) will ever have $20,000 invested in my 8N.

To each his own. If YOU want an Oriental tractor, that your option. I, personally, prefer the N.

Thanks for your opinion,
Danny

Have you seen a '69 Kubota L200 still in oeration?
This is the first model Kubota imported to USA. I would suspect not. Have you seen any '39 Ford 9Ns. Ol' Henry built these machines so a farmer could repair them. Whether you like it or not, the Ford tractors revolutionized farming, just like the Ford Model T revolutionized automobiles.
It is true there were better more powerful tractors and automobiles but they were not affordable to the entire population. Many current Ford N owners are thrilled to be able to hang on to a piece of history. I am sure many like myself experienced Ford Ns as a youngster. Owning an old Ford has a certain nostaglia to it. It is also something that we can still enjoy and share amongst others from all over the world.
Someday I would like a new shiny tractor, I would still keep the old Ford. They still turn more heads than the new shiny ones.

Of the two Ns in the family, one was bought new by Granpa and has never had a wrench on the inside. Just routine maintanence. Has wore out three sets of tires and is still going strong.

It's a '52 8N 4 cyl.

It's buddy is a '52/'48 6 cyl Funk, that will kick the daylights out of you toy tractor!

This Missouri country boy will stick with what works and keeps on working.

Sure am glad grandpa put the mules to pasture, they served their time well and certainly deserved a rest.

Henry made 'em simple and strong, that's why they last sooooo ooooo ooooo long!

You know, there are those who like football and other sports, those who like to hobby farm, those who like to work with wood, and so on and so on. If Ns float your boat fine, if not then go do what does. If it ain't illegal, you have the right in our country to enjoy what makes you happy. Remember that the country that makes them "boatas" does not always allow you the same leway ours does. I bet you are a big NAFTA supporter right?

Rocket Man, we respect you your thoughts, and I'm sure the foreign countries enjoy your money. We just kind of like quality, nostalgia, and things that you might not understand. Like the American Flag, the wars that we and our fathers fought and all it stands for. We enjoy capturing and holding on to the lifestyle that once existed before the world turned to crap. We don't expect you to also like it. But, we don't go around trying to insult others for what they enjoy and what lives in there memories and their heart. So if it's just insults or agitation your looking for, please go to another site and have a good time. You might also think about getting a life. You must be bored and have the need for something constructive to do. Put your energy to good use.

God Bless America. And fools such as you.

As a side note, my 8N will kick the crap out of a pair of mules any day. Half of the time and I don't have to feed the 8N anything but gas and a little maintenance. I have enough mules in my household to deal with!

On to the tractor discussions! There are other websites available to discuss mules Rocket Man.

I sorry you are so critical of these fine tractors. Me and my father ran the one I have now for 21 yrs without one problem. I can't recall it not starting or not being able to do what we wanted. Almost everyday it was being used to bushhog or drag a 1/4 mile drive or push snow in subzero weather. After I get it refurbished it should last through me and my son. Going to spend about 2K on it. Not bad for a "new" tractor huh?
