9N/2N Transmission Noise

My friend asked if I would help him transport a "new" 8N he bought. We went with my trailer to pick it up and as soon as I saw it I said that's not an 8N. It had a three speed tranny and 9N hydraulics. He pointed to the big 8N stamped on the engine next to the starter. Another mut, 8N engine on a 9N tractor. Anyway I drove it to the trailer and when I pulled it out of gear into neutral while still rolling it made a wierd gear grinding noise. Whether moving forward or reverse when you put it in neutral it seems to be partially in gear or bumping up against gears. Moving the shifter only makes it worse. I'm hoping it's just the shifter, or shifter rails, themself is bent or something. Any ideas or should I just pull the cover?

If it is a 1939-1941 with a cast aluminum shifter cover the gear lever pin under the boot may be worn or the cover worn to leave it slide the gear against another instaed of neutral, later they switched to cast iron or cast steel which held up longer.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch rod? Part of me wonders if it isn't just the clutch not being let out all the way. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to pull the cover. Even if it's just a worn shift lever ball, you still have to pull the cover. Plus, it'll give you a good chance to evaluate the condition of the gears in there and give an overall tranny assesment.
