How can you tell if your Governer is in need of an overhaul? I have no tack on my tractor so rpm"s not possible to see. When the tractor is under load (eg) climbing a hill with a mower, it seems to take forever to recover to the upper rpm"s...is this normal?? I noticed my linkages are worn out a bit, it takes about 1/3 throttle to engage the govener lever. Any thoughts?? Thks Ron

The easiest test is to see if the engine responds to throttle changes in the lower half of the throttle lever quadrant. Put the lever at it's lowest point; the engine should be at idle, 400-500 rpms. Then, start moving it up a notch at a time. Is the engine speed increasing? If not, from my personal experience & contrary to what the manual will tell you, just go ahead & pull the governor off the tractor & open it up. There are other tests & adjustments you can fool with, but you might be spending a couple of hours trying to adjust a worn out governor. You have an oil line, two pieces of linkage, and two bolts and it's off the tractor. Take the screw out & inspect the races & balls. If the balls have flat spots & the races have grooves, you will need to replace them. Once the inside of the governor is in spec, then you can start adjusting the linkage & control spring. Remember the first rule of governor repair: SHORT bolt on TOP!
