If you are using new rings, they should have come with a sheet from the manufacturer showing proper orientation for installation.

I would contact the supplier and get an instruction sheet before proceding, because there's too much at stake here, if the overhaul fails.

That being said, ALMOST WITHOUT EXCEPTION, any step, chamfer, taper, or bevel on the INSIDE of the pistom ring will face upwards.

Any step on the OUTSIDE of the ring will face DOWNWARDS.

If you will notice at the site below, there is one type of ring (in this case of Hastings, the 126) that is the reverse, but that is an exotic ring not likely to be found on this old iron.

Rings with out dots can be installed either side up. with no marking i always install the inside belvel up. You will see the inside belvel installed down but always has a dot to show you to install dot up inside belvel down. if it has a outside scraper it will go down, if it has a inside scraper it will go up. If their are letters on the ring they go up, thats the way I have seen the foreign ring made

Up is marked. Top ring counterbore faces up.
Each ring must be fitted to the cylinder it ends up in. The end gap 0.010-0.017.
I hope you have these specs because there is side clearance also. Skirt, stuff like that.

That 'counterbore must face upwards' isn't too damn clear what that means.
Wide end of a counterbore is the up end of a counterbore. If you buy that then on that ring the part# is up and the counterbore 'end' is up.

Keller..... ....from the I&T FO-4 manual..... ...."Two compression rings and 1 oil (3-piece) control ring are used on each piston. New rings are marked to indicate top side and must be installed accordingly. COUNTERBORE on the top ring must face UPWARD." ..... .....respectfully, Dell
