I have a "49 8N and was wondering if it is fesible to move 700-800 lb round bales with a 3pt spear? I have thought about the front end being light and will probably have to use some kind of wieght to keep it from bouncing up. The good thing is that if it won"t work the guy that is baling will move the hay for me. Any help, suggestions, comments will be greatly appreciated.

That is at about the upper limit of a good working lift system. It will make the front end very easy to steer and you can do a wheely without even trying. You might have to use the brakes to steer it. If you can borrow the spear, I would say try it, but if I had to spend some money, I might look into one of these tumble buggies or something that lets you load a bale on a set of wheels and roll it that way.

I already have the spear, but the cart idea might work better. I can always take the spear back to TSC and get my money back. I might use my 5 X 10 trailer and my four wheeler too. I did that last year before I got my tractor.

thanks!

You may want to add a box to the front and put solid concrete blocks in it. Bolt it right onto the holes in the front axles. The front bumpers that they used then will give you a good idea as to how to adapt it to the tractor.

Or take a bumper and weld a box on front to put the blocks in. Blocks are nice as you can take them out and lighten the steering load when not moving bales.

I move 2000 lb bales with a 2000 with about 6ea 6x8x16 blocks on the front. The lift grunts a little, but the bales come right up into transport position.

Thanks Mark,
I can probably fabricate a box w/ out much troublbel and my bumper alread has two "L" brackets welded to it as well as the hitch that was already there.
Thanks again!

Well, I didn"t even get to try out my bale spear. I went to undo the nut off the spear to take it out of "shipping position" (the way it came from TSC) and the nut was so rusted onto the spear I couldn"t get it off. Tried oil and elbow grease. I think it is going back and I will get a new one. My four wheeler earned its keep last night though. I have a 5 X 10 trailer and we, my wife and I rolled the bales unto the trailer and then I halled them up the lane and into the field. I am sure the tractor would not have been hurting like I am this morning...not as young as I used to be. But it worked. I think next time I will have my drawbar set up and pull the trailer with the tractor, but the four wheeler was ready to go. Thanks Honda!!!"

Have a great day!
