Oops...how do I reassemble my starter?

I put my starter back on my rebuilt engine without a gasket. Then, thinking I needed a gasket, I took it out. Unfortunately it came apart. I can't figure how you get the shaft back down in the middle of the brushes. There are also two little ring thingies down down there that look like they go on the shaft. Ugh. Do I have to take it apart? How do I do that?
Would appreciate your input. Thanks!
Oh, and does it need a gasket?

There is a lot easier way to assemble the starter after you have released the brushes.

The way I learned to do it is to pull the brush us about half way out of the brush holder so that there is enough to let the brush spring rest against the side of the brush and let the brush tension hold it. After the starter bolts are installed then all you have to do is to push the brushes down and the springs will usually pop onto the top of the brush.

Kinda jigger the brush so it's cock-eyed in the holder and when it's all where it needs to be just straighten out the brush and it all pops into place.

It needs to ground to the frame / flange.. I got three N's without a gasket..

As for putting it back together.. here's the skinny.

Pull the brush band off so you can see in there. get some fishing line and tie each brush flush to the holder on the inside. Super thin magnet wire will work.. bailing wire's too big. A small vip tie ~may~ work depending on the commutator.

Those little brass rings go on the armature right where it rides in the rear bushing... hold them on with a dab o' grease.. and slite the armature down and wiggle it in.. then cut your line/zip ties and pick the pieces out to release the brushes. This works pretty easy if you put the field shell in a vice to hold it, and use a had on the armature.. and then have another hand available for a dental pick or other small probing tool in case the brushes aren't quite retracted enough. Once together.. slide theose long screws back thru.. and nut one of them till ya get it to the tractor ( 7/16 maybee? )

We've all done it before.. ya learn some 4 letter words in the process.. then it becomes easier..

I had this same conversation with fellow list member and N-guru Dell a few years ago when i had a starter come apart on my 8n, and he gave me his tips and tricks. He used toothpicks or matchsticks as I recall. My first one went together that way.. on the second, I couldn't for the life of me locate a toothpick so I tried the fishing line idea.. etc... just one of those things...
