Should I use detergent or non-detergent?

Depends on what the tractor's BEEN using. If it's BEEN using non-det for years, then continue to use it. Don't ever use engine cleaners to break up sludge in an engine you wish to keep running. If it's been using det. oil, then continue using it. (You don't want det. oil to break up old sludge in an engine that's been using non-det. and send it through your engine. And you don't want to deny your engine the benefits of modern oils with their additives if at all possible, if it's been using det. oil. A new engine should use non-det for break-in, then switch to det. oil.)
Contrary to imaginative thought, varnish/sludge coatings on non-moving internal engine parts are not detrimental. They are protective against rust/corrosion. Leave them there.
"Modern" det. oils have anti-rust/corrosion additives that try to make of for the lack of coatings created by non-det. oils. The real advantage of so-called det. oils is their ability to suspend combustion by-products/particles for filtration and drainage at the oil change. But you shouldn't introduce them into an engine at mid-life. IMHO

Farmer,
If you want to safely clean your engine, I would use a product called AutoRX. It is the ONLY product I'd put in there for cleaning. The results are amazing, and it cleans very slowly without damaging anything else.

If you are comfortable with the current level of clean in the engine, then use a good detergent.

Like others have said, oil type is almost a religon/politics question, but what the heck, here is my opinion. Use detergent oil, but.....and a big BUT, unless you just rebuilt the engine, don't just pour the detergent oil in the crankcase at the next oil change. Get a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil(MMO) and pour it in; run the tractor at operating temp for an hour, and drain the crankcase while the oil is hot, and change the filter. That should loosen up the sludge, etc in order for you to change to the detergent oil. Then, schedule your next oil change in about half the time you normally change oil. Check the archives for lots of very good reasons why detergent oil is the way to go.

Bruce (VA) opined "Get a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil(MMO) and pour it in; run the tractor at operating temp for an hour, and drain the crankcase while the oil is hot, and change the filter."

Not trying to be nit-picky here, but I would guess that Bruce means something like this: Change the oil, and substitute a qt of MMO in place of a regular qt of oil, and then run it for an hour. The way it now reads could be interpreted as meaning all you need is a single qt of MMO in the crankcase. Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like a bad idear.

Just wondering ..

John, tnx for the clarification; I guess someone new to tractors/engines could take what I said to mean drain six quarts of oil & replace it with one quart of MMO! Not!

Gonna stick my neck out here as I never posted this answer before. Somebody"s gonna smack me for it I just know.

Gotta Oil filter?

yes. det.

no. non det.

Det is designed to keep particles in suspension so that they can be removed in a filtration system, rather than remain in the engine and become sludge deposits.

If you have no filter, what"s the point.

The next point is to look at the ASME rating of non-detergent oil; it"s SA. SA is not recommended for heavy duty applications; says so on the can.

If your tractor is in a heavy duty application, the oil mfgr/packager states that you should use detergent oil which currently carries ratings like SG, SJ.

You're call. I would suggest you search the archives for the full skinny OR if you peruse the "Articles" under "Research and Info" look for the article written by Llamas on hydraulic fluid and oils.

General consensus is to use HD (high detergent) on a newly rebuilt engine to keep it clean. Otherwise to use non detergent so as to keep from loosening sludge that might relocate and clog up something somewhere else. This is a very "hot button" issue on these boards. Hence the archive search.

Which chart are you referring to? The JD green PMS code or the ferguson gray code? I think I can get fergie gray at napa in one of their books and another person chimed in with the PMS code for JD green, so i'm pretty much set. Next weekend my tractor WILL be painted as I will have no other tractors in the shop to work on. Yippee! This sunday markes the 1 year anniversary of my tractor going "under the wrench"! At least I have driven it around a bit.

Yep, I did, and thanks. Replied 8/27 just before midnight. Didn't check the board yesterday (Honey-Do's) so am only now seeing your question. Hopefully, the reply got thru ok.
