Directly below the oil filter canister, there is a boss on the engine block, with what appears to be something that looks like a bolt on /in it. It is to the left of the dipstick. Just curious what it might be. Also, is there a seal for the governor shaft? I have a small oil leak that appears to be coming from that location. Thanks

There is a seal for the governor shaft and they are available. On an 8N You have to remove the shaft from the governor to install it which means driving out the tapered pin inside the governor housing. If you do that you probably ought to replace the needle bearing the shaft rides in while you're there.

I have the boss you're talking about below the oil filter and directly above the oil filler pipe but mine is not tapped. The only other hole in that area on mine is the coolant drain petcock.

When the 9N originally came out, the oilfilter ouput was piped down to the boss in the block that you are refering to. Ford found out that the governor balls needed more lubrication than the original oilslinger splash lube at the front of the crankshaft provided. So Ford re-routed the oilfilter pipe output to a NEW governor cup for more oily balls. Many early 9N engines were "up-graded" to this better oiling scheme.

As for your governor "shaft?" leak, there is p/n 9N-18183, seal, governor, dust, usually included in a governor rebuild kit ..... ....Dell
