Just recently purchased my 8N from a lady that lives down the road...*paid 1000 for tractor, boxblade, and 5ft brush hog* Not a bad deal I think. :)
I get it home, and put a new battery to replace the new bad battery that she bought 2months before...*she left the key in the on position*
Anyways...put this battery in and tried to start it...and it turns over extremely slow, not like I would expect from something with a new bat. in it.
Any ideas?
I haven't messed with it since yesterday when I did all this...

Outlaw,

Back when I had 6 volts, one of the battery cables was all corroded inside. It looked fine from the outside, but it gave me fits. Finally one day it would not start, and I jumpered around the cable and it worked. I replaced that cable, performed an autopsey on the old one, and she was all corroded at the end. Once I got the new one on, she worked great. She started every day, even in the dead of winter to plow the driveway. The only reason I changed to 12 volts is because the replacement tractor had that.

Outlaw..... ..to ears used to the whirr of modern sewing machine 12 volt starters, the 6 volt N-Starter sounds soooo sloooowww. But surprizingly enuff, its fast enuff to start a good engine in below-zero weather. Please note: the 6-volt N-Tractor came from the factory: POSITIVE ground. And it is always a good practice after you replace the battery, re-polarize the genny/voltage regulator.

To re-polarize (and you can re-polarize as many times as you feel the need) just "arc-spark" the 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator BATT and ARM terminals (below your oilpressure gauge) Hint: the BATT and ARM wires are HEAVY 12ga yellow wires. The other 2-wires are thin 16 ga black wires.

And don't be surprized that your squarecan ignition coil and distributor points have burned themselves out. The left-on ignition switch will do that besides discharging the battery. And truefully, the OEM ignition switch is not as rugged as we'd like it to be and it may ALSO have burned itself out, too..... .... Dell

Hi Outlaw, I'm sure you know that 6v. cranks a mite slower than 12v. If it is a 6v.and after you've tended to the cables upgrade,if there's a lack of ign.spark I would suspect the coil.As per"she left the key in the on position*".I Think the coil could be damaged by leaving the ign. switch on.HTH

What Don sez.....once you get the big, fat & short 1 or 2 guage cables on it, and everything is clean, bright & tight w/ a charged battery, it should spin quickly. Remember to clean the copper starter bar connection off the solinoid as well. If it doesn't spin quickly, it might be starter rebuild time.

He posts from Magnolia, too. Assuming it"s a 6v, might be the battery cables. 6v needs BIG cables. Tighten all connections. Clean, tight and bright is the 6v montra. Steve might come over and help ya if he"s not too mad at missing the same deal.

Hey, Outlaw...

I"m not too put out at missing that deal... :-)
My brother-in-law"s got a pretty good deal in the works, right now... a "48 8N mostly complete (not running) with 5" brush-hog (that"ll need a bit of welding) for half that, that I"m probably gonna be pretty busy helping him with...

I"ve heard of folks using welding cable for their battery cables. You"ll need something that"s about 0 guage (I"ve found 1 guage at Tractor Supply, in Tomball).

But, as Dell mentioned, I"d bet that your points and/or condensor are burned out, if she left the key on.

Keep us posted on what you find.

BTW... Where in Magnolia are you? I"m at the east end of Hardin Store Road...

We"re at the other end of Magnolia...towards Plantersville...off cr 302 *Hinkey Road*
Down passed King"s Orchard. If that makes any sense to ya :)

We changed the sediment bowl out today as the threads on the original was stripped on the fuel line side.
We *my father and I* also changed the batt. ground with a bigger truck batt. cable, still not big enuff...and still no luck.
My dad said that we"d get the bigger cables and give that a try.
He"s wantin to get the manuals for the tractor as well...as he"s gettin flustered tryin to figure things out.. heh heh.
But I"ll keep ya"ll posted on Booger"s *the tractor"s name* progress... :)

I know where Hinkey Road is, there"s a fella that I work with, lives down there (5-6 miles past the orchard). I un-hid my email, if you want to jot it down, for future reference (there"s a strategically placed blank space, after the @ sign that you"ll need to remove).

Haven"t met the fellow, but I hadn"t realized that 6v systems needed bigger cables...currently it has the same size as what would be on a truck battery...
this be my first tractor project...its added to the currently growing list of projects around the house.... heh heh

Besides the bigger cables.. make sure the flat braid ground cable has a good clean metal to meal conenction.

Also.. you mentioned that the previous battery was killed by leaving the key on.

You minght want to check the points.. see if they are burned.. etc..

You got those pencil-necked batt cables that is why it cranks slow. You want the big ones...and short ones.
The original ground strap was 7" long. 12" works and is available with a 14" hot cable at TSC. I think all those length are accurate, close anyway and you get the idea.
Makes a lot of difference it does.
