My 46 2N runs great but has never been rebuilt. It doesn't smoke. I'd like to run some Marvel Mystery Oil through it, but wonder if I'd just set all those old parts free, starting oil burning. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the input, guys. I'm new to this restoration thing, but at least I know enough to ask for help from those who know. Thanks again!

First: An aviation consumer magazine had Marvel Mystery analyzed to find it is solvent (possibly kerosene) with red dye and perfume.
Second: Motor oils do a couple of things. They lubricate. They cool. They clean. They do very mild cleaning,...not the harsh dissolving that solvents do. Why? Because oil that sits on non-moving parts turn to coke/varnish. This becomes a coating that protects the non moving parts from corrosion. (Remember that the by-products of combustion include lots of water-vapor, that condenses and becomes acidic due to the sulphur in oil and fuels.) Those parts that move against each other form polished surfaces that need lubrication (and not gritty junk from dissolved solids.) The non-moving parts that are protected from corrosion by coatings ... need to stay coated to prevent rust. Solvents will dissolve those coatings and send the grit thru the delicately polished bearings, etc....something YOU DON'T WANT! All your engine needs is clean fuel, frequent oil changes (without snake oils), clean coolants, and occasional tune ups. Trying to imagine innovative ways to "make it better" will destroy it. My 2 cents.

I use it in everyting but only in the gas/diesel. Since it"s a solvent, on a 50 year tractor, it might loosen things up that you don"t want if you put it in the crankcase.

Ditto.

I keep a bottle of MMO around, but if you don"t have any symptoms calling for using it (and from your description, you don"t), then don"t (use it, that is).

I have a $7 quart bottle of Marvel less like 2 tablespoons or some. My 8N was puffing a bit of light colored smoke when it started and when I let out the clutch under load. I mixed some Marvel with the gas. But shortly after and before I burned that gas I turned the main jet in something under 1/8-turn and presto, the smoke was no more.

Hmmmm! Runs great, doesn"t smoke..... ..Now what was the question again? Tune it up, change the oil, give it a bath, check the tires, wax it but I would be hesitant to try to fix an unbroke machine. I think Marvel Mystery oil is a wonderful product, and I keep one oil can full of it to free up stuck and sticky parts.

Scott, couple weeks ago I checked the MSDS on Marvel Mystery Oil and some other solvents and cleaners including a *new* *hitech* (highdollar) fuel additive mentioned on this board. I compared ingredients tween em and against the solvent mentioned below. Turns out it is pretty much Stoddard solvent with red stuff in it.
Stoddard solvent is mineral oil is paint thinner.
Paint thinner has some stuff like keytones or esters or benzenes or something that is a lot of greek on top of the Stoddard solvent and that is just almost exactly like Marvel and the other hitech new-fangled highdollar fuel injector cleaning goops.
