I just bought a 8n(1949)and thought I'd checked it all out before I bought it.Well a few days after I got it home I stuck my finger in the radiator and had oil on it.I check the oil to see if their was water in it and it didn't look like their was. What would cause oil to be in the radiator???

Art..... ..it's NOT OIL, its usually combustion by-products forcing themselves thru a leaky headgasket. Usually looks like a rainbow sheen floating on top the radiator water.

This is NOT to say that the previous owner/s might have added some radiator additives to oil the water pump, or to seal a water leak. These can also look like oil in the radiator and can last a long time in the water jacket. Might even consider a real chemical radiator flush to really gitt ridd of the "oil". You never know.

I'd do a compression test to check for failing headgasket seal. Then I'd re-torque all the cylinder head bolts (70 ft/lbs) or studnuts (55 ft/lbs) and then I run it for haff-n-ourr, letter cool and check the compression again before I gott too excited. New headgasket $20 (cheap)..... .Dell

Dell,
Thank-ya much,I'll try doing a chemical flush and check the head bolts. The tractor seems to have the power and my oil pressure is about 40lbs.cold and about 25lbs.hot.I know those old flatheads are tough old things.I had a 1946 Willys Jeep with a flathead and it was unstopable.I can live with a blown headgasket also, but will try the easiest things first.
Thanks again! Art
