I bought this old soldier and started my rebuild a few weeks ago, been lurking here since. The front axle is on my mind today. It's been r&r'ed, and there is about 1/4" of slack front to back that is not taken up with the front spacer and the two rear shim washers. The FNH guys say not to worry, but I'm not buying it. What do y'all think? I've also got another issue with the pivot pin bushing bore showing a bit of wear where the old bushing wore through and wallowed out the bore just a bit in front. There is a little daylight showing around the bottom of the new bushing where I could push in a bit of JB Weld. Would that be advised, or should I do the big buck fix, or nothing at all? The new bushing did require a couple of whacks with the mallet to seat, so it is not all that loose...

Thanks,
Ramrod

I don't go along with the NH people very often but this time they are almost correct! The geometry changes more than slightly on the NAA when the axle pivots and/or the axle spacing is changed. 1/4" sounds like a little much to me but 1/8 to 3/16" would be just fine. Do not pack it tight with spacers.

I replaced the Kingpin bushing on my Jubilee project tractor and still had a little slack in the alex movement. I brazed up the ware area on the kingpin and polished it back down to the original diameter of the non-ware portion of the pin and it still had some slack but it was much tighter than it was to start with. I had the same issue when I did my 8N front end. I added an additional rear washer (total of three of the thinner washers) and it took up the slack nicely. Don B at a certain NC 8N shop told me the maximum was three. My bushing was also wore completely through, but only on the edge. Getting the old one out took welding a bead around the inside, and heating it up with a torch to red hot so a perfectly sized socket and a big hammer would wack it out. I had to freeze the new one to get it to go back in with a block of wood and a large hammer as well. If I could see daylight though the edge, I would fill it in with JB Weld, smooth it up while it was still pliable, then sand/grind it flush with the rest of the bore. Then put the bushing in after it is cured.

Good luck,
Dan

I can"t actually see daylight, actually only a bit of a void along the front lower edge of the new bushing where the wear occurred after the old bushing wore through. I was thinking I could force a bit of JB Weld in alongside the new bushing to fill the void and support the bushing in that area. Of course, the "right way" would be to have it fill welded and rebored, or replace the front axle. That sounds expensive, and I"ve got a lot of tractor left and only a little money to go the distance. Like so many of us, I"ve already put more into the old tractor than I paid for it, but this tractor will go back to work and pay me back as soon as I can get it back in the field.

From what you describe, I would probably dress it back up.. forget the jbweld and go on to the next part of the tractor.

If it really really botherd me.. I'd braze it up and file it down.. or if you don't have gas bottles.. weld it up and file it down...

the jb weld won't do much for stress anyway. Gap sounds like it is out of spec slightly.. but again.. not enough to worry about. Like you said.. there are plenty of other money projects on the tractor..

If it is only a little void on the edge, and this void doesn't travel back more than 1/2" or so from the edge, I'd just leave it and worry about something else. I thought it was worn the entire length of the bore and you could actually see daylight in between the bore and the bushing...

Good luck,
Dan

OK, thanks guys for the input. Here"s the plan - The FNH guys have one shim washer in stock, I"ll add that to the two I have on, should reduce the clearance to 1/8 to 3/16 inch, well tolerable.

Next thing on my mind is the compression check I just completed, 1-75psi; 2-75psi; 3-125psi; 4-125psi. I"ve been lurking in the archives long enough to know this means head gasket time at the very least, but while the head is off, I think I might like to get a valve job done. With 125 on the last 2 cylinders, I"m not too worried about the rings just yet, kinda betting on the front two coming up to that standard when the head gasket is replaced, and not too worried about the valve job increasing the compression and causing trouble in the rings blowing by, but what do y"all think? Is there a way to tell if the head is up to par without just doing the valve job? I"ve got a good auto machine shop in Cowtown that would love to do the job for me.

Did you try your compression check wet, too?

I"m right there with you, thinking that you"ve got a leaky headgasket, and what"re the chances that leaky rings on 1 & 2 would bring the compression down to 75 on both? Slim to none, however.... That might help with determining how far off a ring job might be...
