Yeah I know what you mean, mine jumps out of gear as well. I have learned to keep my knee against the shifter when on a steep hill but last Saturday when I mowed a hill for my neighbor I had to use my feet on the radius rods to stay in the seat so I just held on to it. Kinda odd feeling laying back that fer on yur tractor.

I just recently replaced my 1/3 gear detent ball and spring, for a similar reason (in this part of Texas I don"t have any really big hills, but my 8N would pop out of 1st or 3rd under a heavy load). Really easy to do. The detent ball is a 3/8" steel ball. The spring is about 1, 1 1/4 long or so. Remove the transmission cover, the spring and detent is just to the right of center along the back of the opening. The spring is easy to remove... the ball a little trickier. I took a big magnet and stuck it on a little, narrow, screwdriver and carefully (without touching the sides) reached down in that hole and stuck to the ball and pulled "er out. Now, remember that the detent ball is supposed to be 3/8"... the ball that I pulled out was no more than 1/4". What a difference!!!

Yea..... ...Had the same thing happen to me on my Jubilee. I live near the Ky. River in Clark Co., Ky. Hill was so steep that one, or the other, rear wheels would turn backwards every now and again. I now hold the tractor in gear with my knee against the shifter. Luckily I was near the bottom when it happened. First time I mowed that area, I made the mistake of touching one brake. Talk about a thrill. Didn’t have time to think about what to do, just had to react.(GET OFF THE BRAKE STUPID) This is one of the times where I wondered how a newbie ever learns to work with one of this machines with-out getting killed..... ..... Hey Roy,when you pull the tranny cover to check for wear & tear put 'er in neutral and watch for a small detent spring between a couple of bolts close to the seat. Not a lot of pressure but easy to lose. While your in there check the set screws holding the shift rails. Oh! yeah disconnect power to switch first. Good luck

It is NOT UNCOMMON for 'N's to jump out of gear while coasting downhill.

For operation on hilly terain, there is NO SUSTITUTE for properly functioning brakes, and an experienced operator. These machines are not toys for kids or inexperienced operators, especially around hilly areas, or even worse, slopes AND water.

There have been a couple of posts on here over the years about near family tragedies when an 'N has jumped out of gear on a slope.

Only happened to me once - I have a long, twisty and steep driveway, and once was enough. Now when I go down that hill I keep my knee firmly propped against the shift lever, constantly forcing it forward!

I was going down one of the hills on my (in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mtns.) Virginia farm in 1st gear on an 8N. Luckily, it has decent brakes and I was not too far from the bottom. CHEAP THRILL!!! :-)

Now this 8N has been not well taken care of before I got it. Never had any indication of it coming out of gear going up hill, THAT would be even more "interesting"!!! So I held the gear shift engaged down the next hill with one hand and steered with the other. Good thing the N's are so easy to steer. That may be the thing you'll have to do.

Wear in the "dog" clutch for 1st gear caused by shifting too soon!! Had a pto clutch do the same thing but that was from the shifter not engaging the clutch fully.

Good luck,
Regards,
Larry
