Jubilee - Getting Rougher

I'm in the engine now, made the mistake of checking compression, 1 & 2 were at 75psi, 3 & 4 were 125psi. Pulled the head off, 1 & 2 have water in them, and the head has 3 extra (round - quarter size) water jackets that the block does not have, on the manifold side between the cylinders. Is this a head from another (mismatched) engine, or is this a normal thing? It doesn't seem right to me.

The other thing is the cylinder wear at the ridge. There doesn't seem to be any significant wear at all. Could I be lucky enough to have bought a recently rebuild engine? Wouldn't there a significant ridge there in normal circumstances?

I'm gonna drop the head off tomorrow morning at the local NAPA shop, he has guru status in the area for NAA's. It'll be check and repaired if needed, we'll see what gives...

The head gasket does cover the holes, so maybe it's not to worry about that. There was a thick black head gasket on the engine instead of a metal one as I expected, but that may mean nothing in the long run. I think I'll get the head checked over for cracks and such, then bolt her back up and run another compression check, see if I can get lucky...

Ramrod, I'm no expert on the Jubilee but I am also restoring/rebuilding a 53 Jubilee. If I recall correctly, I have the same water holes you mention on the head of my jubilee project tractor. The guy at the NAPA machine shop should be able to confirm if it is the right head.

Also, the cylinder bores in my block had a pretty good ridge at the top.

I wanted to get by as cheap (I mean economical:-) as I could and initially planned on honning the bores and re-using the old pistons with new rings. But after researching the archives here I decided to have the sleeves bored out .020 over and install new .020 pistons. The cost difference of having the cylinders bored verses installing new sleeves was about $30. The I&T Fo-19 maunal states that the recomended overhaul is to bore the sleeves rather than replacing them if they are not scared up bad.

Good luck on your Jubilee project. Rick H. GA.

Many cylinder head/block combos have ports in one and not the other due to the setup of the core in the casting process. Does the gasket have matching holes, or does it just cover the unneeded ports? If the ports need to actually flow water, the gasket will be ported accordingly.
