Robert..... ...you say your engine smokes and is weak, but otherwize runs fine? A good engine doesn't smoke (you know that) and is has enuff power to do the job. This is to confirm what you already suspect and don't want to admit, yer engine AIN'T FINE.

Time to do the dreaded compression test. Ford specs: 90 psi min (dry). Do a dry (5-puffs minimum) and writter down, then squirt about 1 oz (tablespoon) of engine oil in the sparkie hole and tester again (5-puffs min) and writer down. A good engine wet compression will only increase 10-15 psi, a worn and tired engine the oil will seal the rings and the compression will increase 20-40 psi.

Once you know your engine compression, you'll be able to make an informed decision about how "fine" you engine is. Hows the oilpressure? ..... ...respectfully, Dell

Maybe you're running rich. Turn the carb main adjust in. Turn it in 1/8-turn at a time and see if the smoke clears. When you're done, idle the tractor in high gear and get her rolling forward just a little bit. Then quickly pull the throttle to 1/2 speed. Do that with your brake on. If the engine stumbles you need to back-off the carb adjust some because now you're too lean.
You might try a fuel additive to clean the carb before you tear into anything. Marvel Mystery Oil or something in the gas.
Hope it's the carb and not rings or valves.
