I recently read an article in another forum (Bobistheoilguy) about putting acetone in gasoline. The writer claimed very high octane boost, great cleaning, lower emissions, and a bit more power. Anyone tried it?

Randy: Acetone will dissolve most anything, including seals, etc. I would not put it in my gas tank. Stabil works OK for extended storage.

Might work in a high compression, high performance engine, but would be a waste of time in these old Ford engines. The regular gas we buy today is of higher quality than what was available when they first came out. Only thing I put in my gas is Stabil when I park the tractor for the winter.

Modern "gasoline" is actually not much gasoline, and lots of "aromatics"...stuff added to perform specific functions as regards climatization, cleaning, emissions, etc.. So much aromatics have been added that they evaporate leaving behind residue that is detrimental....and the additives themselves can be corrosive/harmful to fuel line components.
Our tractors, with their gravity feed systems, are so simple that little can harm them, but acetone will soften natural as well as some synthetic rubber and paper gasket carburetor components. (It's the stuff that removes hardened epoxy and fingernail polish!)
Acetone is also a dangerous chemical, similar to benzene (the old-time major component of gasoline, which was largely removed from gasoline because it's a carcinogen. Aromatics were added also to partially make up for loss of benzene.)
