I have an opportunity to purchase a 8N but it has a miss in the #4 cylinder. Compression check says 100lbs on all cylinders and I put in new spark plugs. When I removed the #4 sparkplug it was saturated with fuel. When I short out the other sparkplug wires they miss and it is noticable but not on #4. When the engine is revved up the miss goes away and returns at random Is there something else I could look for or is this the symptom of carbon wires? The tractor did not overheat Any help is appreciated

Randy

So now that you know that the problem isn't terminal, you should be able to buy it with confidence that you can get it running right. But it wouldn't stop me from using the miss as a reason to get another $200 off the price. Just the way I am....

One should not run the carbon filament resistive wires on the tractors. If you have a spare wire laying around substitute it for the one that is giving you a problem. If you buy the tractor replace the wires with solid copper (Cheap) or if you want something better, get the NAPA Stainless Steel Offroad wire set. (That is what I use)

Claus is exactly right! I just yesterday had a 49 8N with an intermitant miss and discovered it had the carbon filiment wires. I replace them with metal wires and it runs great now.

Don't use carbon filiment wires on a tractor.

Hi Randy, the good compression eliminates one major concern. Assuming that plug #4 isn't showing signs of oil fowling, what's left is a bad plug wire, arcing distributor cap, or worn distributor cam and/or shaft. Good luck...Al English
