I have a sherman trans in my 9N. Would not shift into low range (found the problem) BUT...what level should I fill it back up to..and what kind of oil should I use?

Most folks use Ford/NH M2C134D fluid, or NAPA 65-205 GL-1, which is the originial spec 90w mineral oil. Take the lower bolt out of the inspection plate and add fluid (4.5 to 4 3/4 gallons) at the filler plug behind the gear shift until you see it dripping out of the bolt hole; that's enough! Any more will leak past the seals & on to your brake shoes. Oh, I think Mike meant to say start at the rear plug to drain the fluid; it's a small pipe plug, smaller than the large drain plug in the pump & trans.

Matt..... ..while the dealer installed Sheman aux tranny came empty and holds about 1 qt of tranny oil; the main tranny has a part called an "oil-slinger" that actually pumps oil thru the open front main-bearing cage (the seal has been removed to install the Sherman output gear) into the back of the Sheman tranny and actually "over-fills" the Sherman. So that when the tractor is turned off, the excess tranny oil drains back out and semi-changes the oil for you. This is why you don't have a seperate drain and fill for your inaccessable Sherman Aux Tranny..... ....Dell

The Sherman transmission compartment is innerconnected with the rest of the tractor transmission. It's all one big comparment. There are 3 drain plugs on the bottom of the trans case. Two large ones and one small one. Any of the 3 can be used to drain all the fluid. Most people start with the center small plug in order to control the flow. There should be about 4-1/2 gallons of fluid.

The type of fluid used can depend on the condition of the trans and the hydraulics. Do a search here and you will find bo-koo discussions on that subject.

By the way, what was the problem??

The owner I had got the tractor from said "it never did shift into low range". the end of the shaft picked up some surface rust and made whatever it was....even more of a problem.

With some PB blaster (the stuff is great on rust) and a couple gentle taps I got the shaft out. One of the detent balls along with a nasty little bit of dirt had thrown up a burr on the fork shaft. So I set the shaft up in my metal lathe and removed the burr and rust (not getting into the shaft) then polished it with starting with 400 then 1000 and then to 1500 grit wet/dry and olive oil as lube. (olive oil is a great lube when looking to get a high polish on something).
I also reworked the ball with some paper as well and gave everything a good cleaning.

Thanks for the tip on the oil level!
