Can I charge my 8N's 8-volt battery with a 12-volt caharger, or should I switch the charger to 6-volts?

You can make a dropping resistor by using a length of wire heating element out of an appliance like a hair drier, clothes drier, or some such. Just cut it to the length that will give the desired voltage drop. A full length dryer coil should have 10-15 ohms.

I have never heard of an 8V battery. Thought they only came in 6 or 12.

Can someone elaborate on why an 8V battery would add value? Does NAPA carry them? Cost compared to a 6 or 12V.

My charging system only puts out about 7.8V so I do not understand where the advantage would lay.

they are priced same as a 6 0r 12

I charge my 8 volt battery with the 6 volt setting, the 12 volt setting is to high. One of your best investments is a multimeter, then you will have the answers to a lot of your electrical questions. The 6 volt setting will put out about 9.5 volts.

Put a headlight bulb in series with one of the 12 Volt charger leads, to limit current.

Wear eye protection when working around batteries.

Bob, I knew that years ago and I'd forgetten. Thanks for the reminder.
I have a 6v charger so I might just forget it again.

A dead 8 volt batery can be brought up enough with a 6 volt charger to start the tractor and then your generator will take over and finnish the job. I am told that a 12 volt charger will blow that batery up! Have run a 8 volt in a 2N for over 40 years and now have a 9N as well as the 2N with same setup and run a 1950 International truck for years on the 8 volt batery with nothing changed on any of the systems, all generators and orignal setup

8ngreenhorn. You can't charge your 8 volt battery with a six volt charger. Not enough volts, you need more than 8 volts to charge it, but I would think that a 12 volt charger just may be "too" much and would gas it something terrible. What type of charging system do you presently have in your tractor? How long have you had the 8 volt battery? What size lights if any do you have on the tractor? I picked up another 9N last summer with a 8 Volt battery, but it has an alternator that puts out over 9 volts to keep it charged. Don't ask, because I don't know how it was set up to do this. I guess lacking any other way to charge it,the 12 volt charger might be considered and monitore the battery carefully to make sure you don't over gas it and be very carefull, because it could blow up in your face when disconnecting the charger. The gas is highly explosive and very dangerous. However, my suggestion is always to go back to a 6 volt battery and clean up all the battery connections or bite the bullet and install a complete 12 volt system. The in between 8 volt battery just doesn't do it unless you have the charging capability to keep the battery at full charge and that can be done by having your generator worked on or turned up higher to increase it's output. Others will have more information in this area. Good luck and be very carefull when working with your battery. Ron

I charge my 8V with a 12 volt charger the secret
is using the low amp sitting never over 2 amps
the battery will not boil and it works well a 6 volt charger would work if you could crank up the amps somehow just remember low amps never over 2 it may take over night but will will charge her up good.
