Okay I finally decided that this would be a good time to change that bad head gasket before snow flies. Can it be done with the sheetmatal in place? Removing it is such a pain and I always end up dropping the grill on my shins.

I am in the middle of doing it now. It is easier to see the top of the block to make sure there isn't stuff on the mating surfaces without the hood on. You can see what the top of the valves and pistons look like!

my 2 cents worth.....

You might be on to something. Given that lifting the hood and moving it off to the side is a bear you might consider just lifting the hood straight up 6" or 8" or something. It could be blocked off the battery and the radiator or other wise.
Drain the gas so it's not heavier than need be, disconnect everything, and block up one end at a time back and forth. You never would have to lift that thing, and you could get room. For a headgasket change that might be ok.

Pitch..... ...Iff'n ya gotts the early engine with studnuts, you CAN'T remove the head over the studs without first removing the sheetmetal. Took me and my 12 yo son 1/2 hr to remove the not heavy but AWKWARD hood and set it on some sawhorses. And the reason it took so long is because I was instructing in the manly arts of tractor wrenching (grin). Take the hood off, you'll be glad you did..... ..Dell

Where I hail from, "wrench'n" is what you do with your clothes after you wash them. You "wrench'em, then hang them up to DRY!"

I sure wouldn't try it. Ford made the hoods come off easy for this reason. After you drain the gas tank, it is only a 5 minute job. Gives you a good reason to check that in-the-tank filter as well and clean it up...

Good luck,
Dan

I really think that it would be more of a PAIN to remove the head WITHOUT removing the cowl (sheet metal). Might be a good time to also check over the fuel tank. Probably might be the last time you ever need to do it. John,PA
