I have an original 2n with a 3brush output adjustable generator. Will a generator from an 8N work without any modifications?

Thanks for any help, Ron G.

now I gotta throw my $.02 in here. If you want to replace the 4 1/2" 1-terminal generator (8N10000)with a 4 1/2" 3-terminal generator (8N10000A), you can do that. The larger 8N10000B ain't gonna fit without some time in the shop like souNdguy sez. If you plan on using a 2N voltage regulator, and not just the cutout from a 9N, you can bypass the third brush, tie the 3rd brush lead to the batt brush on the inside, and get nearly 20 amps out of the 8N10000A, but I make no guarantees as to longevity.

Are you just replacing a dead genny with a salvage yard genny?

check the link for some three brush info. I REALLY need to do an update one of these days

Ron..... ..what Sounder said..... .and..... Right after the introduction of the 8N in 1947, Ford Parts offered a 9N/2N genny upgrade. It required a 4-terminal squarecan voltage regulator and a NEW 3-wire 8N genny. (and of course included a new wiring harness)

The 1-wire 3rd-brush 11-amp 2N/9N genny with 2-terminal roundcan cut-out relay requires YOU the operator to manually set the genny charging output depending upon the electrical load.

A company by the name of "Fun Projects" makes a 2-terminal roundcan cut-out REPLACEMENT that is a real solidstate voltage regulator for the 3rd-brush genny. Not too expensive, works good, and would be cheaper than finding the parts to convert and install an early 8N genny..... ....Dell

wait lets start over. 9n to 2n compatability in reply to Ron Grzywacz, 09-08-2004 10:41:06
Sorry, I'm going brain dead today. I need to know if the generator from a 9n will fit on the 2N. Sorry for any confusion.

Without any modifications? NO

If you are hand with some small shop tools.. like a welder or torch.. hacksaw.. etc.. I'm sure you could fab a clamp/bracket to hold the 'barrel' style genny the 8n used. Kinda along the same lines that you would have to custom fab an alternator bracket.. etc.

If you do add an 8n genny.. you will need to replace your 2 terminal cutout relay with an 8n vr, and polarize it, etc. If you accomplish this.. it will be a decent electrical upgrade. The adjustable genny on the 9n I think could only crank out 11 max amps, and as indicated.. could overcharge the battery if not adjusted correctly. The 8n genny can put out more like 20 amps ( 25 on a good day with favorible winds and a jumpered field terminal ) and the field current is fairly precisely regulated by the external regulator.

Perhaps you can steal the genny brackets off an early frontmount 8n that has the genny up on the right side.. and then rube-goldberg them into working on the 9n.

The 9n and 2n are the same except for a handfull of insignificant parts.
