I drove my 1948 8N from my house to the Tired Iron of the Ozarks tractor land for the show this weekend. It is a distance of exactly 4 miles. I made the trip in 20 minutes in 4th gear and wide open, which makes my speed 12 mph. Is this about right for an N? These Ns are amazing. I also drove in the Tired Iron tractor drive from Gentry, AR, to Ozark, AR, in June...a distance of 116 miles. Four Ns made the trip just fine, along with 30 other tractors. If you haven't made a tractor drive yet, you should try it. This trip was well planned with police assistance in questionable spots. We could travel only as fast as the slowest tractors, Cubs and John Deere LAs, but speed wasn't the issue since we did it in three days. This is a good way to see the beauty of the NW Arkansas mountains. If you're in the NW Arkansas area, visit our show this weekend, September 9-12.

Two weeks ago I used my 2N to pull a float in a parage. On my way back, still pulling the empty float, I passed an automated radar speed display put up by the local police to discourage speeding. As I passed, the display read 11 to 12 mph, with my throttle wide open.

I called my Insurance Agent with this very question. In New Hampshire your tractor is covered under your homeowner’s policy if it is not registered and is operated on your property.

If you register it (get a license plate)you would need a commercial Insurance Policy, (about 500.00 a year) otherwise an accident on or off of your property is your problem.

If you take it out on the road (uninsured and un-registered) and have an accident you have two problems, you own the accident and a ticket, as the state will surly admonish you for not having a plate.

Never heard of in America of having to register or get a licence for a tractor, In Ohio or Indiana if you tried to register it they would laff at you and acording to my insurance agent if you have a farm policy you are covered under it and if you have anymore than a yard you need that farm policy

Thats about what I figured the answer would be. I think I'll keep my tractor off road!

Thanks for responding!

I have considered doing the same sort of thing from time to time but one thought keeps stopping me, what happens if there would be an accident? How would/should I be insured in this situation? Should the tractor be added to my Auto Policy? Or does my homeowners policy cover this liability? Just curious if anybody knows the answer to this.

Boy was I happy to see this post! I drive over to see my dad regularly, He is 75 and lives about 3 miles away. I routinely take the 8N just for the ride. Takes only 20 minutes to get there (got a couple of hills to climb) and he really seems to get a kick out of seeing the 8N come up the drive. Most everyone "round here just figures I’m nuts, glad I’m not alone…

I keep my tractor on a piece of land about 100 miles from where I live and although I try to get there most weekends that doesn't always work out. Often I have to do other chores that doesn't involve any tractor time but what I do make a point of doing is taking my NAA for a spin around the county roads. It's good for me and good for the tractor. In a world where slow cooking is making headway there definitely is a place for slow drivin' as well. The world looks entirely different at 12 mph.

Cheers, Erik
