Went over to the New Holland dealer and asked the parts guy if he had a recommendation for the tranny fluid in the N, something in writing. He looked in his official New Holland what-to-use-for-lubes-and-fluids book and say '134D, all of those Fords are 134D, hundred series, N's, everything.' I say how about the bigger ones and he says 'everything....but I use 90 weight in my N.' I say 'what kind of 90 weight, GL-1 or 5 or what' and he says '80/90 weight. I don't know....gear oil.'
Asked about winter and he says never had any problem in these Kansas winters but parks it inside and it never gets below freezing.

Yes.. NH now recomends 134d oil as the 'blanket' answer to just about all of their hydraulic/transmission/diffy fluid needs.

The oem spec was 90wt gl-1 mineral gear oil.

The 90w oil works fine in warm climates, and is also great if your lift leaks a bit. It can be stiff in 0 degree weather.

134d oil is thin like 20w oil... great in winter.. not so great if your lift leaks..

I personally use the 90wt gl-1.. not to be confused with the 80w90 gl-5 oils that might damage yellow metals like the ones found in your expensive hydraulic pump. At 17 bucks a pial.. it is even cheaper than the common gl-5 oils..
