While it's down, I want to rebuild my NAA's hyd (piston) pump. The local NAPA guy says it's a real bear, but I'm not sure I can go with that. I know there is a tape that makes sound easy, what do I need to know before I crack the pump? I have a kit from NH...

The pump is not driven by the flywheel ring gear. It is driven by a gear attached to the rear end of the cam shaft.

If the pump gear is damaged you should look closely at the cam gear while you are in the process of building the engine to make sure it is not damaged also. Now would be the time to replace the pump cam gear while the engine is out of the tractor.

Like the man said it is hard thing to do to rebuild that pump without the special Ford tools.

It can be done but it is not easy and not for the amature mechanic for sure.

Thanks Zane for chiming in. I was kinda hoping to get your attention. Where can I find a rebuilder for this pump? Can I change just the damaged gear in the pump easily? I will pull the cam and check/change that gear to be sure. The tractor is gonna split today...

yes it is easy to replace the gear. Just remove the screw/hour meter drive that is what holds the gear onto the pump shaft. Remove the four bolts that hold the rear section of the pump to the middle section and as you separate the pump the gear will come off the pump shaft. I have had to replace a few where the spline had worn off the gear but usually the shaft is OK.

Thanks Zane! I intend to pick your brain some more as I work my way towards the back of the NAA, so save some for me.

Hi Ramrod,

From reading your posts I believe you are in a similar position as myself in that you are refurbishing a Jubilee. I too purchased my Jubilee in non-running condition.

I have no idea whether or not my hydraulic pump works. If I were you I believe I would go ahead and get the tractor running and see how well the pump works and go from there. It is not difficult to remove the pump from the tractor if you wnat to rebuild it after you get it running. That is what I plan on doing.

Of course, if you really want to rebuild your hydraulic pump, go for it. HTH. Rick H. GA.

I have rebuilt hundreds of these, and if you do not have the specialized (Ford) tool for removing the ball seats, you will only be wasting time. You will also need a specialized (Ford) tool to change the roller bearing & seal.

Ramon, where do I get these tools, got part numbers and cost? My hyd pump's gear is damaged, so I at least should fix that before I mesh it to my new flywheel ring. Is that a big problem?

It does pump, but I'm sure it's the original unit, and could stand a rebuild...

If it's a piston pump, it's not the original unit. All NAA tractors came from the factory with a Vickers vane hydraulic pump. Many of them (if not most) have since been changed out to the newer piston pump. Could have happened in the late 50's or not until a few years before you bought it. Unless you know the tractor's history it's impossible to tell for sure.

My 1955 Ford 800 still has the original vane pump. The piston pump did not become a factory original until after s/n 66849 late in 1955 on the Hundred series.
