Jubilee Starter Drive Gear

I have my Jubilee project tractor taken apart and in many pieces. I have got the engine rebuilt and ready to go back on the tractor. I have got the lift cover rebuilt and back on. This evening I got the carburetor rebuilt.

This evening I was looking at the starter and it seems like the starter drive gear is positioned in the engaged (forward) position and will not spring back into the normal position. It seems to me that if I were to install it like that the starter drive would be meshed to the flywheel ring gear without having to be engauged or going through its normal travel.

Is this something to be concerned about or would it follow its normal travel once the engine cranked and spun it back into the normal position?

I tried to twist the drive gear back toward the spring (away from the starter) but it would not go. I have replaced the starter drive gear on my 8N and thought I understood how they work but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I did the same thang to are Jub. Starter what you do is take a toothpick and place it in the starter drive grove then twist the drive back in the wright place do not turn the gear into the engange postion or it will lock agian and do the same thang took us a while to get it back in the wright place. Don't worrie about the piece of toothpick it will fly out when you start the engine but what happens is the flywheel kepts the gear from coming all the way out and when you move it by hand it locks. hope you know what I mean good luck Jason Froehlich

Some recommend that you hold the starter and bendix againgst a spinning bench grinder brush to spin it fast enough to retract the gear. Your theory of installing it extended so that it is engaged with the ring gear should be ok as long as the gears are meshed cleanly. There's plenty of room to install a NAA starter and this should work. Good luck. Steve NAA III443.
