After chasing down a charging problem (see 09/07 post titled 8n charging problem) and replacing the alternator and diode, my '52 8n won't start. Even when jumped, I only get one RRRRR UH when I push the starter button, followed by clicks...

I know that the motor isn't siezed because I can roll the tractor in 4th gear. Is this a solenoid or sarter problem? I am at a loss...

Appreciate all the good advice - I let the battery charge for a couple of hours and the darn thing popped right over. It's now charging at 14 volts and seems to be running great.

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate this resource of information

Andy! Sounds like dirty cables or such. Crank it, jump it, make it click and then feel around for a cable or terminal or relay or something getting warm or even hot! More you rrrrr uh the hotter it gets. That will tell you what you want to know.

Ditto on the cables and don't forget the ground cable where it hooks to the tractor frame. As for the diode - probably hooked right, but even if reversed it would not create the problem you have discribed as to the cranking problem when jumped.

I had noticed that the diode heats up as soon as the switch is turned on - is this normal or could I have it reversed?

I'm with Jack. The diode is not your problem here. It's not in the starting circuit. Your problem is in the big cables and stuff with big studs. If you keep going rrrrr uh long enough something will start smoking! Insulation will melt off a cable, like that. But don't wait for that. You should be able to feel what it is after just a little bit of cranking and rrrrruh.
