Sorry if this is a basic question but I am new to Ns.

I have a '40 9N where the hydraulics struggle to stay up when the tractor is running. As soon as I sut the tractor off with the hydraulics up, it drops down fast. I opened the inspection plate and made sur I had plenty of oil but it seems to be full of air bubbles. Any place in particular I should start with this little problem? Is the pump bad? Seals? Thank you.

If it has problems again.. pull that inspection cover and look in with a flashlight... if you see oil pouring from the hyd cylinder there is your leak. if there is swirling in the oil around the pump.. either a pump seal is blown, or the relief valve leaks... if there is a spray from the top or bottom cover.. the top or bottom cover gasket is blown, venting some of the oil pressure..

Followup

I may not actually have a problem. When I first opened it up I realized the oil was low so I added some. I think I created my own air bubbles by letting it run low and then adding oil. I kept going up and down with the box blade until the bubbles went away. Now no air bubbles and the blade stays up with the tractor off.

Does this make sense? Or might I still have a problem?

Yeah - I knew I would get an answer like that. Thanks. Actually it was just low on oil. My biggest concern was the amount of air bubbles.

Sounds like you're good to go. One thing, some guys never fill it plumb full. They fill until it comes out that bolt hole in the bottom of the round mounting plate the dip stick hangs out. That way the fluid never gets on the rear axle seals to leak out all over their brake shoes and rim. Look at the inside of your rear wheel disks and drums and if it's yucky oil and dirt then lower the fluid level some.
