went and got a new coil today and will try that this afternoon...but here be my quandry...

the original resistor on the firewall was the typical 50-52 model resistor...3 post with wire fuse at the top.
additionally there was another resistor installed that reduced a 12v system to a 6v system.

there are wires attached to each resistor...starter switch hot to the original, with 2 additonal wires that i can't remember what they're running to, and starter switch ground to new resistor, along with what i believe is the coil wire.

my thinking is that this tractor may have had a 12v batt prior to me replacing the dead 6v battery that the owner put in.
does that make any sense or logic?

You sure confused me. If I recall your previous posts this is a front mount distributor. If so and if I understand that you have a six volt system then there is no need for a six to twelve volt dropping resistor but you for sure need a ballast resistor with a six volt system.

What you report is consistent with a twelve volt conversion done Texas style. Or maybe Arkansas style. Anyhow; with front mount coils in the forty dollar range I would for sure make sure I didn't burn up many of them.

If'n it were my tractor; and if'n I understand that you have already thrown a six volt battery at it; then I would get myself a new wiring harnass, hook it up like the picture in the FO 4 manual and then put in the new coil. Then if it dosen't run check the voltage at the top of the coil with the points open and closed and post those values.

If you keep tosing parts at it you will waste a lot of time and money compared to trouble shooting it but your tractor your call.

Your mileage may vary

Outlaw, I too live in Magnolia and am having problems getting fire to my distributor. It was running one day and just died. I've put a new coil, points and condenser. I have fire to the coil but noting from there. Anyway, let me know what you find out. Is there anyone around Magnolia that works on these old tractors? There used to be a guy out at Field Store years ago, but I'm sure he has passed on by now.

JV & Outlaw...

I'm no mechanic, but I did get my '50 8N going. I won't make any promises as to what benefit I can provide, but I'll be glad to help, as much as I can.

I've unhid my email (remove the space after the @ sign).

Steve
