I've read several posts on tractors that won't start, but nothing I've read seems to fix the problem. 1947 Ford 9N (2N)
1.fuel tank has new fuel in it
2. fuel is getting to carb
3. carb is fairly new, but still, I opened it up to make sure float was working, and cleaned everything out with Gumout
4. there is spark at the plugs
5. have had this problem since before winter (tractor is in dry garage)
6. before winter if I sprayed starting fluid in the carb intake it would start and run til fluid was burned up, but then quit
7. even tried putting on old carb, but same thing..not even a cough.
ANY IDEAS? I am stumped.

ok..here's an update.
took compression test today...man..it ain't easy getting that hose for the compression guage in those spark plug holes!!
anyway....looks like I was right in thinking it was time for a rebuild. compression was...from rear to front..(which cylinder is #1 again?)...
40-90-70-40
for the fun of it, if I put all the plugs back in, and squirt some starter fluid around the intake while cranking...would that show if there was a leak in the intake?

Also, check for a leak in the intake manifold.

Have you checked the plugs? Wet with gas? Oil fouled? I assume from your post that they are dry and ok, but you didn't say. If they are dry, and you said they are getting fire to them, it seems like a definite fuel problem. Did you clean the elbow and filter where the line enters the carb? One other thing you could try is disconnect the air cleaner to make sure that isn't clogged and causing an intake problem.

You didn't mention anything about it so I'll ask. Is your choke rod connected and does it close the air intake when pulled out? Keep trying. Steve 8N 169302

Rick ,Im no pro, It sounds like you are trying to get your tractor to run on water and not gasoline. Moisture in bottom of fuel tank ???

Hi Rick! I agree with Tim, and would also make sure that something hasent built a nest in your intake manifold. I have found that mine will not start without pull starting it if I lose one cylider!

Rick: we've got to know a little more. Is this a new tractor to you, or have you had it for awhile, and if so, did it just suddenly stop running or has it been giving you trouble for a time ? Since it ran on starting fluid, I don't think it's electrical. The carb is either not giveing it gas, or you don't have enough compression to suck in the gas to start it (remember, starting fluid is already atomized and it has more of a kick than gas). I would take a compression check and eliminate kthe pooibility of bad rings, valves etc. If that's ok, then I would start looking to some clogged jets in the carb, or a bad leak somewhere on the manifold causing a loss of vacuum. My $.02
