This weekend I was running my 51 8N on a newly poured concrete pad. When it was parked overnight, I noticed a small puddle of Hydraulic Fluid under the rear end. I could see where it was coming from and it was only about a tablespoon or so of fluid, so it was not too concerned about it.

My concern was the color of the fluid. It is a Tannish sort of Milky Brown. I presumed Water has entered the system somehow. I drained off a pint and put it into a glass jar and let it set overnight and there was no separation of any water. I pulled the side cover to the pump and there is no rust inside. I pulled the fill cover off of the Tranny and there is no rust in there either.

Any thoughts, advice? Should I change the fluid out? If so should I do a flush of some sort? I have 5 gallons of fluid in stock.

Thanks in advanced.

Water!

Fluid s/b amber'ish. Milky suggests water is mixed in. Look for primary culprit to be shifter bulb being cracked. Replacement is cheap and easy.

Could be condensation over a period of time but no matter what the bad stuff has to go.

How much water would it take to turn the fluid milky-brown. Have read that condensation would do it but, seems like the air on top of the fluid would have to had a lot on moisture in it to amount to anything. As this is condensated out, wouldn’t that be the end of a source of water from condensation in the sump?..... ...enquiring minds want to know or would this take too long to explain to me..... E. Ray

Thanks, That is what I suspected.

Should I attempt some kind of a flush to get all of it out?

Drain it and look see. in reply to Packrat in NH, 09-13-2004 08:45:16
If it needs cleaned out a gallon of paint thinner or kerosene or something with a parts brush will clean it out good enough.
Then you can flush the sovent through there a few times, reful it, and go.
Get a shifter boot.

If you've never done it, flushing is a good thing. There's a lot of muck that can build up.

Techniques are many but most times either diesel or kerosene is used in a pump sprayer. Dropping the hyd. pump is suggested as that is the lowest point in that section of the tractor. Zane came up with an easy to get the differential case cleaned by going in the PTO opening while you have it out.

I had an occasion to clean mine out 2 years ago and I found lots of crud and metal shavings from bad bearings. Replaced the bearings and all is well now.

Not a real bad job but something well worth doing.

Good luck
