Poppy. Do you have a belt tightener that was on most tractors. I didn't have one and didn't even know they came as standard equipment at one time. My FO-4 Manual shows one on page 121, Fig # 179,items 12 through 16. I built one a couple of months ago for my 9N and it appears to be working, so far that is.Hope this helps. Ron

Check that the belt and pulleys are all intended to play nice together.

The stock original belt was a 5/8ths wide belt. The crankshaft, water pump, and generator pulleys were all intended to take a 5/8th belt.

Modern cars typically use a 1/2 inch wide belt. If someone in the past substituted a handy-dandy 1/2 inch belt from Walmart for the correct 5/8 belt, it may appear to work, but the inside diameter of the belt will bottom on the pulley instead of riding in the correct position within the "Vee". Even though the N series puts relatively little load on the belt, a bottomed 1/2 inch belt will tend to slip no matter how tight you adjust it.

Anoother way you could go wrong is to do a home-brew alternator upgrade and retain the 1/2 inch alternator pulley with the stock 5/8ths wide tractor belt. A 5/8" belt will ride too high on the pulley and will also have a propensity to slip, though this is less severe of a problem than the 1/2 inch belt on 5/8 pulley mismatch.

Belt dress'in is not good on a V belt. eather ya need a new belt , sumin got on the belt to make the noise, antifreeze comes to mine. you can clean it two ways. #1 good old bakin soda, acts likea abrasive just take a big pinch and throw it between the pulleys of course wile its not running. start'er up and repete till the noise is gone. Nutter good sause is fabric soft'ner or even washing power the power kind (he,he). check belt alignment.

Front mount coil? Check to see if the belt is rubbing on the distributor, the lower radiator hose or somewhere else. Tighten the belt so you have 1/2" movement with medium pressure halfway between the crank pulley and the generator pulley. You shouldn't be able to turn the genny pulley with both hands.

Well, if you tightened the belt, dressing don't help either, then I guess a replacement might be in order. HTH...John,PA
