I post on a couple of other sites, and am happy to say that this site is the best one for dealing with 'decent' people.

The one specific other site I visit, of which i won't mention the name, the people will jump on you with a whip at the drop of a hat. I made the mistake of using an online source for some tractor info in a message I quoted.. turns out the site info was wrong... then the onslaught started.

I guess those people live in a different world.

They're quick to spend other peoples money to... if some one logs in to ask a question about what they need, the average reply is sugesting 15k$ to 40k$ worth of new equipment.. etc.

As for technical questions.. about 50% - 80% of the answer are things like: check the manual.. check with the manufacturer... etc.. instead of actual helpfull comments.

Moderation is very 'good-ole-boys' oriented. I've seen no indication that the moderators will take action against inflamatory posts that other mods make.. nor will they take action against a few of the long time posters.. who seem to be untouchable... yet the average common poster is likely to get his posts edited or deleted for saying things that would be otherwise 'ok' by one of the 'untouchables'.

Again.. I'm WAY glad this forum exists...

I really enjoy the cooperation & sharing of knowledge that goes on here. Nobody gets paid for this, and very few guys actually make a living, or made a living, turning a wrench, so all of the info is simply provided in a sincere effort to be helpful. The fact that someones occasional bad day shows up in a post is of no consequence to me. I know that I'm going to get an answer to my question, usually within the hour, and probably quite a few more answers as the day goes on. My payback is trying to answer a few questions myself regarding the highly technical aspects of N operation of which I am familar.....like oil chages, tire pressure, etc!

Yeah Soundguy, this forum rocks!!! I participate in a number of other forums, a few here at YTMAG, a few on RV's, and I moderate two of my own forums on specialty garden tractors, and I find this one to be the nicest "community" Yeah, it can be like "kickin' it" around a table sometimes.
I like that!

You are right. I get tickled when I see a post about an AC or a JD or an IH on this forum because they can get a straight answer (and probably a correct one) here when they can't on the proper forum.

I've said this before but it's worth repeating.

When I first owned the 8N I'm now working on this board didn't exist and finding parts could be a real adventure. Computers weren't around either for that matter. You were on your own except for local advice, if it was available. I used to try to work on this thing with the factory service manual if you can imagine.

I'm amazed to find that some of the repairs I made almost 20 years ago were done wrong. I'm learning that because of the help I get on this board.

I've never been insulted by a response even if the answer is obvious. I'm grateful for every answer I get. This board gets you the quickest and most responses of any board I've looked at. After a while you feel like you know most everybody.

Still, Sounder is right. Some of the folks on the other boards seem to delight in being insulting. Now, off the soapbox and back to my rear wheels which turned out to be very heavy.

I pretty much agree with hvw and others who have found the 'N' & Ford boards to be pretty friendly. It's also made up of people, though, and we sometimes need to keep that in mind. We're all opinionated, we all have a few blow-hards and self-styled experts in our midst. A little lurking generally reveals what's credible and what's not. So whatever negatives there may be are, I think, more than outweighed by the positives, the general willingness to help and share experiences. (And we really DO have some experts!) It's nice, too, that we don't seem to have much of the "I'm more right than YOU are" kinds of bickering that happens on some other boards. Instead, it's more like "Yep, cool, that'll work, too".

There! Now you've seen my touch-feely thinthetive thide .. let's get back to tractors. :-}

Ya may not like this. butttt,,, in reply to souNdguy, 09-14-2004 06:35:23
I'm gonna drop a bit of a load on ya. Some of your topics need a little bit of a response. 1 You mention that you quoted an online source for information, and it was wrong. When wrong information is handed out, it's a problem for a long time to come. I know you believed what you read, but it was wrong none the less. If the person you answered was like me, he charged right out and tried it, only to find he fried something!?? Dang I hate it when that happens.
As for spending other peoples money,, sometimes it is the best answer. When they wanna dig a shopping mall foundation with an N it's a bad idea, more money is a good idea, when they wanna lift 1000 lb. bales, it's gonna take a bigger tractor. As for read the manuals, or check with the manufacturer,, THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT!!!
Helpful comments are not the same as facts. Helpful maybe, but not facts, and not always right. I can't even begin to speak about their moderating practices, nor will I try. I feel competent to speak on this topic, because we've farmed our farm with N's and the like forever, we bought our first N around 1965 I started using it the day it was delivered. Since then I've learned every short cut to keeping one running to get the job done, I've never restored one, probably never will. I've learned how to work on them, and patch them, and baby them through a season... none of that qualifies me to answer most of these questions. Please don't get offended by my remarks, I'm only posting a personal experience. I've charged the thunderstorms, and whacked at trees. LOL
Just ask Dell, Zane, Clause, and a few others that we've lost. My good fortune was that I attacked them with questions, and got shot down with answers! Proveable answers, and they hurt when they sent my logic into flames. I read two other boards as well, and I've got hero's there as well. I've learned alot on all of these boards, All I'm saying is don't get so thick skinned that you fail to absorb the REAL, AND TRUE information that is available. Alot of your advice is top notch, and I'm certainly not about to tell you what, where, or how to post. Here's what I've learned about the learning process on any board of this type. Post what you know,,, but fer cryin out loud, be sure you KNOW WHAT YOU POST. If ya ain't done it or can't prove it, then make sure you know it's so. I refuse to post the advice of people I trust, until I've done it myself. The only reason I decided to post this, is that I took a 2 month break, after getting my feathers ruffled, and I missed alot of good info, that I had to go back to the archives to retrieve. Don't let this happen to you,, LOL Ron

>f the person you answered was like me, he >charged right out and tried it, only to find he >fried something!?? Dang I hate it when that >happens.

Fortunately it wasn't that kind of advice.. it was weights and measures.. and the source i quoted from simple had eroneous info...

>>it is the best answer. When they wanna dig a >shopping mall foundation with an N it's a bad >idea, more money is a good idea, when they wanna >lift 1000 lb. bales, it's gonna take a bigger >tractor

I don't disagree.. but the questions I see. are.. " I've got 10 ac.. 5ac to mow, 2 ac in trees, and 1 ac in lawn, what do i need. to mow with?

By the time the answers are in.. he needs a Nh tc48da with loader and backhoe, etc.. etc.
and is at about 33k including the finish mower and rotary mower. Then they want the guy to get a new 35k$ truck to haul it.. and a 2k$ trailer.. see my point... the guy wanted a 6k$ tractor to mow with.. not something to build his house with... And that same scenereo happens over and over. Sure.. you do get the guys that are looking for comercial machinery.. or who have a project to do.. but heck.. rent a backhoe for a couple hundred bucks and a couple days to pu it your drainage.. don't buy a 4k$ backhoe for one job...

>As for read the manuals, or check with the >manufacturer,, THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT!!!

Like us.. the manufacturer is virtuall useless for many situations.. and while some material / info is great to get from the manual.. If A guy asked me how to change the oils in his NAA.. I could say RTFM.. or I could say.. look for these 4 drains and fills.. and by the way.. you might want a copy of the manual.. they are cheap... Both answers pointed the guy in the right direction.. but the second answer got the guys oil changed..today..

>All I'm saying is don't get so thick skinned >that you fail to absorb the REAL, AND TRUE >information that is available. Alot of your >advice is top notch, and I'm certainly not about >to tell you what, where, or how to post.

I've been there.. heck we all have.. all learning is usually that way.. I remember my first post when i found this board.. it was a resistor post.. and boy did I make Dell mad... but I got the right answer from him...

Pretty tolerant here, I'd agree. Even the guy from the Keystone State that uses this forum like his personal e-mail doesn't catch much flack, even though it gets tiresome and way O.T....

I wonder if this doesn't get some folks in way over their head to where they end up throwing parts in blindly to fix a problem. Basic troubleshooting DOES get explained frrom time to time, but doesn't always 'take'.

My favorite posts include: "My tractor won't 'crank'... what should I do???!"

and

"My lift won't lift but I know it's a front ignition, by golly!!!!! !"

It's entertainment!! duey

Soundguy,

What i really like about this board,is at at times it's like sittin down chattin with friends..I know you've been around the JD board some, you just don't get that there, they'll usually answer your question, usually, but there is rarely stories about a good day on the tractor etc.. When I stumbled on this site 2+ years ago,I had little interest in tractors, just trying to figure out how to keep my old 8N running.I've bought 3 since,2 JD's and an IH.
Later friends,
Tim

The only places I've ever posted is here and the Ford board. I don't have any experience with other tractor sites. I just have to say I'm glad I ended up here first. If I had started on one of the other sites and been treated badly I probably would be way turned off by the tractor community. Being new to tractors, now for less than a year, one of the reasons I have developed such an interest is because of this board. I certainly don't need 2 or 3 tractors and 8 implements for my little 5+ acres, but because of the open, freindly, and helpful people on this site I've become a tractor maniac. What a fun (and useful) hobby, and what a great bunch of people to share it with. SouNdguy, thanks for the post. I definitely don't want to take such a good thing for granted. And thanks to all for making it such a great site. I feel like I have freinds I've never even met. Eric

What!? Five acres, plus? Of course you "need" that much stuff. I've only got 2 acres and I've got 2 hay balers (besides the sickle mower, hay rake, box blade, scraper, boom pole, pallet forks, 3 drawbars, 2 cement mixers). No one else in this little rural mountain valley has 1 baler per acre!

2 bailers? heck yeah.. what if you want 1 ac in peanut hay ans the other in alfalfa.. and need to bale on the same day.. or the other one could be a spare!

I'm seriously approaching that one tractor per implement situation. It's prrtty nice to hop on the naa and mow.. and then hop of onto the 8n and box blade, or drag the pasture without hooking and unhooking..

they have an old tractor section.. and the people there post some wild stuff... they have no idea generally what tractor they have.. and any old ford from 1930 to 1960 is an 8n.. etc.. Hundred series are refered to as naa... etc. Oh well.. I'm going to fall back to reading and slack off on posting there... their loss.. not mine..

Forgive my spelling, there are a bunch of these "professionals" running around the country advertising about quitting smoking. Perhaps they can help you break the TRACTOR-HABIT. Trouble is, at least for me, how does one know if the hypnotist ever really brings you OUT?

Therefore, each time I see a local ad in our paper, I call the professional and inquire about a STATE LICENSE? Like always, they hang up on me. Guess I'll keep smoking, at lease for now.
