Ok guys help.

I just bought a Ford 8n 1949. When the tractor is idle the oil pressure will fall to 10psi at full bore it gets up to around 30psi is this good? Bad? what should it be?

Thanks,
Ron

Yep, like the other guys said, that's good. Be happy. I've run these old tractors with what appeared to be no oil pressure hot at slow idle and 8 or 10 lbs hot and under load at full throttle. Not that I'd recommend that but hey, it needed rebuilt anyway and I had stuff to get done. Poor old beast got used like that for at least 2 years. Tough little tractors.
Later, Lee

Hi Ron. Owner's manual (Original) for my 1948 says 27lbs at 1500 rpm at operating temp. It doesn't give any specs for idle or wide open. Sounds like you are pretty much in the ball park.

If your tractor will hold 10 psi at hot idle.. and 30 psi at hot throttle, you are good to go.

It is when you get down to less thn about 6 psi at hot idle that you have a real problem.

Also.. Many of us will use a 40w oil, or a 20w50 oil, depending on the temps.. etc.. in the summer, and 30w in the winter.. or if the pressure's a tad low.. 40w all year.

Some.. who know that they need to overhaul the engine but need it another season or two will even run it with 50w oil, just to keep some pressure up, and get some more work out of it before teardown..

Oil type is a topic of much debate... just use good clean oil, and change the filter.. Lots of us like detergent oil.. some don't.. etc..
