Just got an 8N from a fellow and he had just installed new points, etc. Then he installed new shaft in distributor. HARD to start and when it does, backfires out carb. I know it needs to be timed. HOW ??

Sam..... ..ya didn't say, so obvious you're a neubie to the N-Tractors. The flathead N-Engine comes in 2 versions; 1-terminal squarecan 4-nipple frontmount distributor ...or... 2-terminal roundcan 5-nipple sidemount distributor.

And since timing the 1-terminal squarecan 4-nipple is a little wierd, I've saved you alotta work by linking a picture of how to time the frontmount distributor.

You do realize that its a 2-bolt, 15 minute finnagle to remove your off-set tang driven frontmount distributor to change and time your distributor on the kitchen table, don't you? Just un-clip your 4-nipple cap and letter dangle. You don't really want to remove the sparkie wires, and iff'n ya already did, remember firing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW. Points gap is 0.015 and timing is 1/4". To re-install, gently finger install the 2-bolts, rotate the rotor until the off-set tang drops into the camshaft slot. Then tighten the 2-bolts, and clip the cap back on. Simple, eh? ..... ....respectfully, Dell

Front mount distributor or side mount ?? Make sure the point gap is correct .015 for front mount, .025 for side mount.

S-O-R-R-Y--- Front mount. Have it off on the work bench. Reinstalled new points after sanding both mounting plate and back of points. Now for the new to me part. Installing distributor after setting point gap to .015. Thanks

Dell pointed you to the How-to for setting the timing. I've found that if I'm careful gapping the points I usually don't need to adjust the timing on my front mount tractors. Good Luck, Lee
