We are still working on our 1944 2N. The next question I have is? When changing the transmission fluid, which fluid or oil do I use? I did search the archives and got lost in all the long explanation. I would just like for you to tell me what brand to purchase, what weight and how much?? I do appreciate all the advise...

Thanks from Texas
Susan

GL-1 is available in 5 gal buckets for ~$26.00 at NAPA

~$36 at TSC (Ford transmission fluid)

There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with the answers that you've been given.

I'll try and make this synopsis as short and sweet as possible.

Go to Tractor Supply.
Buy a 5 gallon bucket of Ford Tractor Transmission oil (it'll say that it's for 1939 - 1952 Ford tractors... it's got a blue label) for ~$30-$40.
That's the easiest way that I can explain it...

Steve

Since you live in Texas (like me) I would use the GL1 as opposed to the 134D. The G1 is thicker and seems to perform better in hot weather. Just my opinion though. From what I've seen on this board people are split about 50/50 as to what they perfer.

First the easy stuff.

The sump hold approx 5 gallons.. though most of us only add 4.5 to 4.75 gallons. Easiest way to check is toy remove the lowest bolt in the right side inspection cover, and add oil till it dribbles htere. At that level, there is plenty of oil for the diffy, tranny, and hyds.. plus extra for cooling.. but not enough to let the oil pool around possibly bad axle seals.. or possibly leaky tranny input shaft seal.

Type.. you've got two 'spec' choices.. and a non-'spec' alternative.

Oem from the factry these N's used a 90wt mineral gear oil. probably the closest to this still available is Traveler branded 90wt mineral gear oil Gl-1 from TSC.. marked as ford transmission fluid for 1939-1952 fords. next best bet is napa 90wt gl-1 oil ( 65-205? ) I think is the number.. also.. wallymart has a 90wt gl-1 oil.

The next spec oil, is the ford/NH m2c134d transdraulic oil. It is thinner.. mor elike a 20w oil.. but is multipurpose. It is roughly generically equivalent to any one of dozens of oils, generally refereed to as UTF... universal tractor fluid.. universal transdraulic fluid.. etc. For instance.. TSC has a utf... etc. JD hygaurd.. jd 303.. IH? hytran.. NH 134d.. etc.. are all roughly equivalent and cross over to those UTF multipurpose oils.
And lastly there is the 80w90 gl-5 oils. The big problem with these are that the gl-5 addative package is known to attack yellow metal. And your N- hyd pump has lots of yellow metal in it. While the damage may be microscopic.. and take decades to observe... chemically.. it is happening.. according to at least one report by a big oil company.

If you lift doesn't leak.. and you operate alot in cold country.. you might do better with the 134d type oil. If you lift is a tad tired.. or you have tranny fluid leaks anywhere.. or you run in hot climate.. deffinately use the 90wt oil. Brand doesn't matter. Anything you dump in there today will be technologicly far superior to what may have been dumped in their from the factory.

For what it's worth.. I use the 90wt oil in mine.. just because that's what it came from the factory with...however.. like I stated.. opinions vary. And don't worry about brand. For instance.. TSC UTF will be about 25$/5 gallons. NH 134d will probably be twice that almost...
