I just purchased 2 8N tractors and I am trying to figure out the year of each of them. I found the serial numbers, but one of them doesn"t start with 8N, it starts with 9N. The serial number is too high to be a 9N according to the chart on this web page right?? Can anyone help?? I"m guessing they are both 49's. Here are the serial numbers on the block:
9N186342
8N183427
Could the 9N serial number be stamped incorrectly??

Thanks

9N186342 is from a 45 2N..Motors have been known to have been swithced over the past 50+ years.

How many forward speeds on the tranny?? 3 indicates a 9N/2N..

All 9N and 2N serial numbers start "9N". Your serial numbers indicate a 1945 2N and a 1949 8N.

All 9N and 2N tractors have 3 speed transmissions. All 8N tractors have 4 speed transmissions. Engines are interchangeable. It is possible and not unusual to have an 8N with a 2N or 9N engine swapped in. Since the serial number is stamped on the engine block and nowhere else, you inherit the s/n of the donor tractor.
