Our Ford 8N will only run for approximately 2 minutes and then dies. OUr first occurence of this happened while mowing, and then continues to happen when not under load. Checked Fuel air and spark and all are functioning normal. Tractor runs on 6 volt system but has 8 volt battery. Have never had this issue with it before. Have had problems with battery dieing, but a over night charge fixes that. Have noticed a oil leak at the govenor that causes the right side front tire to have gunk on it. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Beyond the full pip flow from the fuel line.. check your flow thru the carb float by removing the bottom plug inthe carb. This gives you the side benefit of letting any water out of the bowl.

My guess is also a fuel issue.

Does choke help it any when it starts to die?

You gotta check the fuel flow (3-minute and die). Remove the fuel line at the carb and open the fuel valve. You need a full-pipe flow, not a good flow, a full-pipe flow. Carefully remove the brass elbow and check the screen in the carb. Don"t wrench the elbow in the middle or you will distort the fitting. If you don"t have a full pipe flow then remove the sediment bowl and clean the screen. Put it back together and check for a full-pipe flow. You might have to drain or siphon the gas tank, remove the fuel valve and clean the in-tank screen.
If it"s not fuel then replace the condenser (1-minute and die) and see what happens. You might want to replace the points while you"re at it.

Make yourself a jumper wire out of a piece of wire & 2 alligator clips. The next time the tractor cuts off, remove the gas cap; if it starts up, you have a vacumn lock in the fuel system. If it doesn't start, use the jumper wire to jump the ignition switch. If that doesn't work, get back on the board & someone will be along to help. The 8v battery, however, is worrisome as obviously some previous owner had an electrical problem & figured that was the fix. Simply using the correct size battery cables and keeping all of the connections clean, bright & tight will solve many hard-to-start problems.
